hello all - will hopefully link from the old one!

just realised we'll all have fireworks night to get through shortly. Went out for a walk with dpuppy who is getting much better at walking though we met a big dog which scared him a lot! We can only get him into puppy classes in November which is a shame but at least it's something

Another question, my pup (he will be 9 weeks tomorrow) , with us since Saturday, shakes when meeting extrangers, is it normal? He shakes in the car, which I think is understandable. But shake when meeting new people? Although today we met my friend with a young child and eventually he followed the child wagging his tail.

Are you taking him out already? Ours is similar age and he hasn’t been out aside from the garden. I am a cm though so he is meeting all the children and has been in the car.

Could the shaking be excitement?

ashmts · 02/12/2020 21:36

I've heard terrible things about antlers and will be avoiding. They're apparently far too hard and can break their teeth. Our puppy loves cow ears although it does only keep her busy for about half a hour. I've heard other puppies can take days to get through them?! Not sure if she's just a champion chewer.

Redandblue11 · 02/12/2020 21:54

Georgie we are taking him out carrying him around , the vet said it was important to do that as much as possible to get him used to new things. I would say definitely not excitement but nervous, his body language very worried looking. Tail between legs , ears back etc.

Redandblue11 · 02/12/2020 21:55

georgie in the car, how is he? Is he happy there or shows nervousness?

PugInTheHouse · 02/12/2020 22:55

We were told the same, to take him out as much as possible as long as he isn't on the floor. He comes in the car in a doggy car seat but is not massively keen. He falls asleep by the time I get to pick the kids up from school but then cries on the way home as he wants to play with them.

He loves meeting strangers and licks everyone, he is a nightmare with biting/chewing though, when he is tired or excited he is dreadful.

lyraa · 02/12/2020 23:18

@Redandblue11 I took ours out in a shoulder bag a couple of times but he didn't take to it and shook a lot, with a bit of whimpering as well. I gave up after the two tries and waited for the injections. He's done great since then and has met loads of adults, kids, other dogs in our local park very happily. As well as seeing cars, vans and trains on the way there!
If it's not working for you carrying then I wouldn't worry or push it, there's still time in the socialisation window after the jabs Smile

Frenchfancy · 03/12/2020 05:47

French pup shook constantly for the first couple of days. She still shakes whenever we encounter something new, but it lessens each time.

Sorry I fell asleep, nights aren’t great here.

He’s ok in the car, will cry a little bit.

Just thinking about taking GeorgiePup out, we don’t really go anywhere though Blush Does anyone have any suggestions?

Redandblue11 · 03/12/2020 08:35

lyraa and frenchfancy - ok it sounds normal for some of them , yes I will take it easy and do it gradually then.
I might try today to pick up my son from school by car, we normally walk but that would be a positive and exciting experience for pup seeing my son back from school .
puginthehouse yours looks like the one that likes a good time Grin

Georgie when I take him out, I am not really going anywhere Blush, just pop into a pet shop, even if I don’t need anything but just for the experience, to get him used to shops etc. Literally for 15 min or so, or popping as I said to pick up my son, yesterday I took him to a friends house that has a preschool young child so he could experience being with young kids (mine pre-teen).
Gosh, I feel tired slept better last night but I feel I need a week to recover still.

PugInTheHouse · 03/12/2020 10:46

@Redandblue11Grin

He is a fun little thing, pretty easy really but I do think it makes a difference he is so small, bigger dogs just need more attention I guess. Pugs are like cats in many ways! He is a grumpy sod today, tried to clean his wrinkles and he is sulking in his crate. No idea how to do it without traumatising him but he will start to smell if it is not done, as well as his eyes and ears. All the videos on YouTube show them just sat them letting the owners do it! Treats are not working for it so far!

PugInTheHouse · 03/12/2020 10:49

Re socialising, I do the school run with him, go in the car then sometimes we get him out as everyone wants a cuddle. My mum and dad help look after my 12 year old who has autism so they also come round to see him. We have had a few door step visitors too as people wanted to meet him. He loves cuddling everyone. Obviously a bit tricky at the moment as we are in tier 2.

We also took him to my husbands work as I had to help him with some stuff so some of his colleagues came to say hi.

HappyThursdays · 03/12/2020 18:55

It's our first puppy class tonight. Only one of us could go in so I've stayed outside but I can hear him barking (not aggressively, it's his 'I'm excited' bark!). Cross your fingers for us as I'm really hoping we can do this course because she also does scent training courses when he's older so it would be good to get off on the right foot (argh!).

Re the shaking @Redandblue11 I do think some pups are more sensitive to some things so it's a good idea to go slowly if they are v scared. Ours is a boisterous, busy dog but even today, he freaked out by the sounds of the cars on the wet road (all the splashing and different sounds) and I had to really slow down because he was trying to bolt poor thing!

@GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat we went to the Garden Centre (carried). Lots of twinkly lights and even a singing reindeer Grin

PugInTheHouse · 03/12/2020 20:54

Grrrrr pup just had a wee in his crate, hes not done that before and he at least 80% reliable at going off for a wee on his own. He holds it at night so not sure why he did it then. He was quite stressed though as seems to get overtired in the evenings, I think its because everyone is home so he just wants to be around everyone. He gets very bitey too.

DoubleTweenQueen · 03/12/2020 22:34

Interesting to read about shakes pups as ours is 11 wks and have been taking her out for short walks in my arms, and she quivers uncontrollably. Also took her on the school run to pick up DD2 in the car, which was from quiet rural home to busier town - then carried her to the school gates. She shook in my arms and salivated on my sleeve quite a bit. When she is shaken, she even loses interest in taking a treat, we offer her to help her make going out and seeing new things positive. Thinks it’s all a bit overwhelming - all I can do is try to build it up slowly as I can and keep reassuring her. Hoping she will get more comfortable as we do it more? Hope so - she’s really settled and secure/bouncy & bold at home. Reading similar experiences gives me hope! Am going to try the school run for pickup every other day next week and see how we get on. Can start short walks at the weekend too so hope she will take to that. Fingers crossed - will report back!

C4itl · 03/12/2020 22:48

@PugInTheHouse toilet training seems to go out the window here too when puppy gets overtired in the evening!

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 04/12/2020 07:39

Anyone else’s pup experience the zoomies? 7am and 7pm he has a mad half hour where he’s so nippy and manic and out of control. He stops listening, pulls and bites our clothes and is generally a bitey little shit. I feel like it’s only GeorgiePup and it’s starting to get me down.

BiteyShark · 04/12/2020 07:42

Georgie my dog used to get crazy bitey at particular times of the day when he was a puppy. You could set your watch by them. I found it was because he was usually over tired or over stimulated and a short timeout before he got out of control helped. It is unfortunately pretty normal.

DoubleTweenQueen · 04/12/2020 08:07

@GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat Yes - jumpy and bitey. Our pup is confined to the kitchen and garden mostly, until she learns her manners! She is almost 12 wks. She goes completely nuts in the sitting room and is not sweet and cuddly unless she's tired. The children don't play with her much, but have cuddle time when she's calm. Morning and evening are worse. We try to stay still, and use a clicker and treats if she gets all paws on the floor and sits nicely for it. Mouthing - mouthing biteyness, I let her mouth me as she is trying out what pressure is gentle enough to use playfully with her humans. If proper nippyness, she is ignored or taken out for a turn around the garden, depending on if I think she's bored or over-excited. It's all normal, difficult to love, but needs time and patience x

DoubleTweenQueen · 04/12/2020 08:11

Zoomies - we have these too, where she goes nuts for bombing around and playing aggressively with toys. I let her - as long as she's safe and no-one else is in range. She soon gets it out of her system and is fine being handled shortly afterwards so far. I think she knows the difference between a toy/blanket and her family - will see if she calms as she grows. It's not too bad.

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 04/12/2020 08:34

Gosh I feel better hearing that. I must admit I cried this morning, he just wouldn’t let up. I felt those puppy regret feelings coming in. He’s also found a growl and a bark but I have read up that during playtime it’s their way of saying ‘more more’.

DoubleTweenQueen · 04/12/2020 10:08

@GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat That is all perfectly normal too :) We've had ours three weeks and it is getting better and we love her now. It's definitely in at the deep end x

SpreadHummusNotHate · 04/12/2020 10:15

Hi, can I join you? Our pup has been with us a couple of weeks now (she’s nearly 10 weeks old). I have my eye on her all the time she hasn’t been left alone yet - but the chewing and the biting are a lot to deal with. My feeling is that she doesn’t sleep enough during the day - she never stops! At the moment she’ll be awake for about 2 hours then I make her nap for an hour - I think it should be the other way round! Any ideas how to force some longer naps...? She’s a little lamb when she has just woken up and more receptive to training etc Smile

I am hoping when she has had her 2nd jabs and we can take her out for a walk (sniff mainly Grin) things will calm down a bit?
