hello all - will hopefully link from the old one!

just realised we'll all have fireworks night to get through shortly. Went out for a walk with dpuppy who is getting much better at walking though we met a big dog which scared him a lot! We can only get him into puppy classes in November which is a shame but at least it's something

Forgot to add, he is totally adorable and cuddly, likes biting toes and ears though!

Retrievemysanity · 30/11/2020 12:56

@PugInTheHouse for cleaning ears we use a cotton bud and hold a treat in the other for her to nibble on (hold the treat between your fingers so it lasts). Not sure if that will work with cleaning wrinkles?!

Atalune · 30/11/2020 13:21

Can we get a pic of your pug puppy please?!? 🥰@PugInTheHouse

ashmts · 30/11/2020 13:36

@PugInTheHouse we've had her out in the garden since day 1, the vet said that was fine but not to put her on the ground anywhere else. She's been fine. You can only be so careful, it's important to get them used to toileting outside ASAP imo. Check your grass for fox poo etc but sure you'd have noticed if there was anything already.

PugInTheHouse · 30/11/2020 13:55

Thanks Ashmts, yes we checked for fox poo but we have definitely cleared some in the last few weeks and we were told they can pick up infections even after 2 years! He seems ok going outside for a wee. He goes on the pad on his own but will go outside too if we take him.

Not sure a treat would work whilst cleaning wrinkles, he goes crazy for treats haha. He loves them so much I have managed to teach him to sit for them after a wee!

@PugInTheHouse I was massively anxious about parvo the week before she arrived so I understand the worry. I guess it's whatever you're comfortable with, there are so many differing opinions out there (and so much judgement!) so just go with what works for you. We did have puppy pads down at the door as a backup initially but our puppy lasted about 48 hours before ripping them up and trying to eat them... Your puppy is very cute!

Our pup's first day at doggy daycare today. The guy who runs it has put some photos on Facebook, looks like she's having a great time.

Atalune · 30/11/2020 15:30

Oh he is lovely!! Well done.

PugInTheHouse · 30/11/2020 16:31

We are at the vets Weds morning so I can ask then. He seems to really love it outside so would be good. He is so good with the pad, he was at the opposite side of the room playing and just ran over to the pad to poo bless him.

Hes a real cutie, looks a bit like Stitch from Lilo and Stitch or an Ewok when he lays on his back Grin

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 30/11/2020 18:34

Oh gosh we’ve been letting GeorgiePup out to wee in the garden, he’s always on the lead so he can’t go off wandering unsupervised but now I’m worried.

Frenchfancy · 30/11/2020 18:39

The advice here in France is that you can walk puppies as soon as they have their first injections. It is thought that the combination of the vaccination together with the immunity they get from mum is enough for normal situations. You are supposed to avoid areas with lots of dogs and don't let them eat any poo.

I would go mad if French pup couldn't run off a bit of steam in the garden.

HappyThursdays · 30/11/2020 18:58

@Puppypuppypuppy we would really struggle without enforced naps as even at his age now, he gets overtired though like you say, some days they are easier to enforce than others. The one eye open napping is a real menace!

We weighed pup today as he's looking v strong for a cocker - he has a massive strong chest. He's not fat by any means (can still feel ribs and see his waist) but he's looking extremely well built (he is so so strong) and is already 10kg which is right at the top end for a cocker and on the weight charts is in the 'overweight' category. I don't know if in height and length he's any bigger than normal but I think we will try and check tomorrow if he lets us measure him. We haven't been to the vet for a while but last time we were there, she wasn't worried though I think we will have to ask again!

Tiny progress on 'wait' today but went a bit backwards on his walking. Can see that is going to take us the longest time.

Welcome lovely new pug! What a cutie @PugInTheHouse

Thanks HappyThursdays.

@Frenchfancy after a crazy run around yesterday feeling he certainly slept well so its tricky to know what to do. He is actually scratching at the back door crying to go out. He doesnt need a wee, he just wants to run.

HappyThursdays · 30/11/2020 19:14

@PugInTheHouse we were told the garden was safe - I don't know whether you're very rural or in the city. I think it's definitely worth clearing up any animal and bird poo that's around more because they are likely to try and eat it! We would have also gone mad had we kept him out of the garden. The good thing is that non vaccinated dogs wouldn't have been in your garden.

PugInTheHouse · 30/11/2020 19:19

We are in the city however have lots of fixes, in fact we have recently had a family of foxes living a couple of doors away till the neighbours cut down their overgrown garden as we were having all sorts of issues.

PugInTheHouse · 30/11/2020 19:19

Foxes not fixes haha

newpup123 · 30/11/2020 20:12

@HappyThursdays ours is getting weighed for wormer on weds so I'll let you know what she weighs! She eats a lot, always seems hungry

Redandblue11 · 30/11/2020 21:16

A question, pup (Labrador retriever) arrived on Saturday and yesterday he was really good at going in the garden as I took him regularly through the day. Today it has been a bit of a disaster, I carry him out , through a patio to the grass and he just sits there or tries to quickly come back into the house. I thought he might not need but then 5 min later poop in the house, so he did that 4 times ... for two wees and a couple of poops. Why is he doing that?
He seems to run into his crate whenever I try to take him out ... I cannot think if he became scared of something or what.

HappyThursdays · 30/11/2020 21:33

Thanks @newpup123 - I was going to ask you as they are much the same age (we are 17 weeks, 18 on Saturday coming) though you've got a lovely girl so she should be a bit lighter but having started off not interested in food, he's certainly hungry all the time now too!

@Redandblue11 will he walk out to the garden with you if you go?

OP posts:
Redandblue11 · 30/11/2020 21:50

@happythursdays, no ... there is a step that I am worried so I have so far lifted him before he attempts... actually the step is ok, do you think I am stopping him? And he maybe does not like being carried?

PropertyHelp · 01/12/2020 07:22

@Redandblue11 you have to just stay out with them, throw a ball, walk around. If I just stand there the puppy sits and looks at me or goes up to the door. If I'm walking around the garden she'll follow and then go off and sniff and hey presto, a wee. She did the same thing as yours for a couple of days until we sussed it!

XiCi · 01/12/2020 07:46

Can I join? Could do with some advice. Obligatory photo attached Smile. Weve had pup almost 2 weeks now. First night was awful, barked most of the night in his crate and had no sleep. Crate was with us in our bedroom After that we settled into a routine where he would go to sleep, up for toilet and back to sleep again. This weekend he went straight to sleep and slept right through so we thought we'd cracked it! However the last 2 nights have been awful. Sunday he slept till 3am got up for toilet but just would not settle again. Barked for an hour non stop. I probably shouldn't have but for ours and neighbours sanity I got up and slept downstairs on the couch with him just so we could get some sleep. Last night he wouldn't settle from the off. Constant barking. Didnt need toilet just wanted to play. In the end after hours of barking and numerous attempts to take to toilet but him just wanting to play we took the crate downstairs and he eventually settled to sleep. I'm wondering whether he is just not tired enough at night. He hadnt had 2nd jabs yet so just so hard when you cant take them for evening walk . Last night in particular he seemed to doze all evening then be wide awake by bedtime. Any advice at all welcome. We're so tired by this point and just feel so sorry for my neighbour!

Thank you @PropertyHelp, this am DH did that just before 6 and worked he tried to come back to the house but as DH would walk and throw a ball he eventually came back.
For bkfst I made him work for it, did a mini trail in the patio towards the garden and then persevered shaking his bowl and he was uneasy about the step but he cracked it rubbed around with me and eventually the snif, squat and poop. 😁

@XiCi I am probably as novice as you as only had pup for 4 days but I have been working on his crate, him liking it. During the day as he wakes up I am near, being a toy there, the first two days I have him one of his meals there. I did a den for him, covered, comfy blanket and paper and secondhand newborn toys . He loves it there, is in the kitchen. after play I go and sit next to him next to the crate and he settles , if I move he whines but give him reassurance quiet words not too much eye contact (children at school and me working from table near). Last night at midnight I had to do the same, 15 min of lingering near his crate until he was settled. He slept till 5.30 when DH came down to take him to toilet and clean inside.
My DH allowed him a nap on a comfy bed at the bottom of his sofa and he took ages to settle for nap in his crate. So I made a rule he is only allowed in the crate for naps so we are not making it comfortable for him anywhere else until he is settled and knows the crate is his place, but then again I will have a big lab, your pup might be allowed in furniture.

Puppypuppypuppy · 01/12/2020 09:38

@XiCi I don't have any words of wisdom I am afraid but @Redandblue11 seems along the right lines! We were not very consistent about getting Puppypup in the crate except at night so he would rather sleep anywhere but there during the day now - he's next to me on the sofa as I type. Do you think he's disturbed by you in your room? I slept next to the crate downstairs on the sofa for a week - am sure DH's snoring would have woken him up!
