Puppy before jabs - best practise whilst I'm out and about doing mum tasks with kids

Hi all,

I have been reading a while to get ready for the impending arrival of puppy.

I'm a working single mum of two children (one in college one primary age) and we've never had a dog before. I'm able to work from home lots, my office is 2 miles from home so can pop in quickly and if the dogs personality suits he'll be able to come to work with me (office is in a small business park on edge of town, loads of greenery and lots of others have their dogs at work and walk around the estate).

I have to do mum taxi runs for the kids sporting activities a several times a week. Twice a week its its a 15 min journey each way and I wait onsite for an hour then come home, another other is a 25 min drive each way with a 1 hour wait onsite. Then I have football training (1 hour) and matches - travelling plus 1.5 hour for the warm up and match.

The plan was to take the dog as from the start as being in and out of the car is going to be a way of life for a few more years!

So question, until the second jab and he's allowed out out - how best is it to manage a few weeks taking him out? I have a rucksack that I planned to use so he could see and hear the goings on. I have a pet hot water bottle for the cold football sessions but what do I do about the toilet situation?! They use puppy pads now (at home with mum and siblings) should I take these and use or will that confuse the poor thing? I have a large crate for the car.

When the boys dad left my youngest said 'now dads left can we get a dog' and then a few factors aligned and it became possible! I'm cautious by nature but it did feel like a now or never moment so I'm trying to go with it.

Would appreciate any advice or suggestions!

Seeing as it’s only for a few weeks, I would just put the puppy down to do wees. So long as it’s right next to you and there are no dogs or visible dog poo right there, the chances of it catching something is tiny.

thank you @TooExtraImmatureCheddar

Mostly it will be carparks so chances are low although a little concerned about the risk at football places but if pop him down on the ground in the carpark it will be safest risk?!

Yes - I know someone who took her retriever puppy for walks before the second jab and just picked him up when she saw another dog coming. I’m not confident enough to do that, but putting the puppy down for a minute or two to wee doesn’t seem as risky.
