DDog is a rescue and has been with us for a couple of years. She’s coming up for five and has recently been diagnosed with arthritis. Vets have suggested either switching over her food (Hills) or supplementing with Yumove.

We’ve decided to supplement but I have been looking at switching her food for when her current bag finishes. Will of course phase it out but want to feed something higher welfare / possibly more sustainable. I’ve done a bit of research and have come up with a short list of the following:

  • Canangan
  • McAdams
  • Tribal

Would be grateful for general thoughts/ advice / experiences and other things we need to consider!

Have a look on the All About Dog Food website - they assess on a star system and that might be helpful.

I was going to recommend the same website!

Came on to recommend the same website.

I had my guys on Canagan for about a year, but it didn’t suit either of them. Not heard of the other two.

Yumove is ok and seemed to help my old boy a little at first. Then I did some research on the Canine Arthritis website - I think someone on here told me about it originally. I kept him on Yumove, but added in Seraquin, Omega Oil capsules and Turmeric for Dogs (I use Flexi Turmeric for Dogs from Healthspan). The turmeric definitely made a big difference, but took a few weeks to kick in. I have recently done a bit more reading up and am just transitioning him onto Riaflex Canine Joint Plus and Green Lipped Mussel, dropping the Yumove and Seraquin.

I should add that he is is a very old man for a big lad at 15 years old and also on Rimadyl from the vet (although we’ve been able to drop half a pill a day since the supplements started to work). I give my vet a list of his supplements to keep on file as well (important in case of interactions).

Lots of useful advice and tips for things you can do to make dogs with arthritis more comfortable on the website I linked to.

Thank you!

I have looked on all about dog food and Canagan comes up top out of the three (87% as opposed to lower 80a). I didn’t really want to put her on Hills because it doesn’t seem great quality and I would like to feed her something that is more sustainable and higher quality.

@moosemama I have looked at that website somewhat briefly, I’ll take a look again. DDog is quite young for her diagnosis the vet has said and that at this point she would benefit from supplementation, short term NSAIDs and then take it from there. It’s not that bad right now but it will obviously change over time so that website will be really helpful, thank you.
