Looking for some advice please.

We've had a 7 year old rescue for the past 7 months. She is toilet trained. However, we have just learned that she hates rain, so will not go outside in the rain...
she will go in the morning for a wee and will go when forced out IF at that specific moment she does need the toilet, however lately, there is one small wee on the carpet on the landing some days, only on days it rains.

Any idea how to stop it? She is toilet trained and we still praise her when she goes outside so I'm at a bit of a loss. I have put down puppy pads in the area when it rains just in case, but she goes on the area where they aren't instead.

Please help!

If she's still weeing inside, she's not toilet trained yet.

What are you cleaning the area with? You need to use a proper cleaning solution designed for pet urine - Simple Solution is a good option and should be available in most pet shops. If you don't clean the area properly, they get drawn back to the smell.

For now I would keep her in one room where the floor is easily cleanable and keep your eye on her. Look out for signs of needing to go (sniffing, circling, squatting) and get her out straight away. Praise and treat as soon as she goes in the right place. For some dogs, praise isn't enough and you need to cement it with food Grin

I probably would get a vet check just to rule out infections but if you are 100% sure it is only when it is raining then that does make it easier.

When it is raining you may need to make a point of taking her out at regular intervals as a grown dog you should know how long she can last but at least give her the chance to go out. I would take her on a lead and use an umbrella over her so she does not feel the rain (although it is probably the smell and other things about rain she does not like).

As soon as she wees rush her inside cheerfully so she knows the minute she wees she gets back in the dry again.

If she has only recently started i would get her check at vets first. Then go back to toilet training. Some dogs don't like the rain. Maybe a roll out awning above the door for when it rains?

Vet check

  • spayed females sometimes develop urinary continence issues as they age. They are easily fixed with regular medication.
  • uriniary infections can cause incontinence and need antibiotic to resolve
etc

Otherwise, on rainy days send her out early, often. keep her contained somewhere easy to clean until she has peed outside.

Toilet training is mostly habit forming, so the key is always to prevent the dog experiencing peing in any location but the one you want. Peeing is an inherently reinforcing activity so when the dog pees inside the action is automatically reinforced by the lovely releaved feeling we all get post wee. Hence, try to avoid any chance of weeing inside.

It can help to train a wee on command. Repeat the wee phrase every time she wees (whatever cue you want, e.g. "have a wee") and eventually it can become the cue that triggers a wee - once a strong association has been built in the dog's mind between hearing that phrase and having a wee.

Same here, though mine is only 11 weeks so she has a bit of an excuse. It's been torrential here, inside as well as out ...
