Cold dog

Do any of you worry about your dog getting cold overnight? I came downstairs this morning and the room that the dog as in was a bit nippy. He sleeps in a crate and doesn't like his big, fluffy bed in there so sleeps in there with a smaller bed. He would mither a hot water bottle into leaking and I don't think he'd snuggle under a blanket.
The room is double glazed and as warm as the rest of the house. I don't know if I'm worrying unnecessarily (first-time puppy-mum 😂) or if there's something additional I could do!

I think you risk them waking up and moving about more when cold. They may then wake you up to toilet early due to the moving about.

I would look at covering the crate to keep it warmer or seeing if you can alter the heating in that room before temperatures start to drop further.

Take him to bed with you 🥰

fairydustandpixies · 13/10/2020 19:44

My ddog sneaks under my duvet when he's cold...! 🥰

BiteyShark · 13/10/2020 19:46

I must admit now BiteyDog sleeps on our bed it's a win win situation. He doesn't get cold and he also keeps me warm Grin

CMOTDibbler · 13/10/2020 19:49

I have lurchers, and the one who feels the cold wears a fleece coat indoors from September to May. He does a great line in pathetic looks when cold

BadEyeBri · 13/10/2020 19:50

What kind of dog do you have? I have 3 lurchers and we live in a 200yr old house with single glazing. The whippet cross has a very fine, short coat and I put a dog rug on him at night only in the depths of winter. Remember that most dogs are wearing a massive fur coat and don't need much else.

bodgeitandscarper · 13/10/2020 19:50

Ours hate the heat and leave comfortable beds to sleep on a cold hard floor, they are labradors though. The !urcher likes a fleece blanket and being covered up. A lot depends on the breed. I wouldnt like to think a dog was too hot and unable to escape for its comfort in a crate.

carolebaskinfedhimtothetigers · 13/10/2020 19:51

Mine come and get on my bed when they get cold!!

sunshinesheila · 13/10/2020 19:55

Mine likes to sleep with me. Snuggles up under the covers with his head on the other pillow.

Rubyduby26 · 13/10/2020 20:02

Our dachshund seems to be a native breed of the sun with how hot she wants to be Grin

She sleeps under the duvet at night but in the day she has a heated throw, dreamland is the brand we got.

We are on our second one now as the first broke earlier this year after 5 years use, it was about £120 but worth every penny as she used it for at least 6 months of the year and you can wash them too! Maybe give one a go?

ArcherDog · 13/10/2020 20:05

Depends on the breed really. Most hairy dogs are fine in a double glazed house.
A small, thin or hairless breed may want a heat source/jumper.

JanetandJohn500 · 13/10/2020 20:08

He's a shih tzu face-licker. He's not coming into our room 😂 I'll try a woolly jumper in there with him. We did used to cover the crate but we've got out of the habit (we moved him to a room with blackout blinds). We might try that gain but he's a nosey little bugger!

Have you tried a snuggle sack for him? Some like it, some don't but might be worth looking at?

Sexnotgender · 13/10/2020 20:35

I’ve got the heating set to keep the chill off overnight. No way I could have 2 greyhounds in my bed😂 I am contemplated pyjamas for them.

GirlCrush · 13/10/2020 20:38

self heating bed? i saw them in pets at home as i have similar worries

but mines a lab puppy and prefers the floor too @bodgeitandscarper

his little nose was cold this morning though

Bunglemom · 14/10/2020 08:58

We bought a heat disk for dogs off amazon and its amazing! they cant bite it and it really does stay warm for 11 hours, its ace!

vanillandhoney · 14/10/2020 14:51

Mine sleeps in the bed with us Grin

He makes an excellent foot warmer.

Darklane · 14/10/2020 15:35

My little Yorkie feels the cold. She sleeps either on/in the bed with me or if she wants to get down in one of those soft, fleecy lined, squishy beds with an extra blanket. If it’s really frosty, old house too, she has knitted jumpers.
The Skyes hate the heat, the colder the better, so sleep either in crates downstairs or on the cold kitchen floor. If they could choose for themselves they’d sleep on the cold flagstones outside the back door where they lie every chance they get, if it’s howling a gale up here even better.Hmm

Stellaris22 · 14/10/2020 16:45

Ours gets cold at around 2/3am and gets onto the bed and under the duvet, but always on DH side of the bed.

That bit isn't too bad, but she whines to be allowed onto the bed so wakes us up.

Funf · 14/10/2020 19:40

Our you certain he is cold?
Our breed you hold the ears if the ears are cold the dog is.
She does have a big fur coat though and doesn't like heat

ErrolTheDragon · 14/10/2020 19:55

My dachshund has a somewhat odd bed covering - a thin pillow with an old cot blanket thrown over it. It actually works really well because he can get right back underneath it if he's got out in the night (he seems to need to vigorously reset his ears a few times every night). Quite often there's just a tail or leg visible, sometimes a bit more.

I put a duvet over my lurcher last night after her 1 am pee. She snuggled into it and seemed happy.

LBee2020 · 16/10/2020 09:47

@ErrolTheDragon- love that pic!

ErrolTheDragon · 16/10/2020 10:35

Well... it really is the dog's bollocks!Grin
