What's happened to my dog?

I've just collected my dog from the groomers.

I took her in for her usual nail clipping and tidying up of her paws.

I asked for the her tummy and fur round her bottom to be 'tidied up' as well.

She'd never has her beautiful plumed tail touched because I've always told them not to touch her tail. I forgot to mention it this time, but it should be on the computer as to what she normally has done, but the groomer has completely destroyed it.

Instead of her beautiful wavy tail she got a short stubby bunch of fur.

I know I'm being ridiculous but I'm feeling very emotional at the moment and it's really bothering me.

Please tell me it'll grow back to the way it was.

Also the fur on her haunches is really short and she keeps rubbing her bum on the carpet, as I imagine it feels really odd for her.

Surely with grooming it's not 'one size fits all'. A long feathery tail and fluffy bum are a mark of her breed. Why cut them both off.

It will grow back.

I remember when I said make my dogs ears short and he came back with Labrador ears rather than cocker ears and he just didn't look like BiteyDog but you quickly get used to it and in a few weeks it will start to grow.

WinWinnieTheWay · 13/10/2020 13:48

Oh Bless you both! It will grow. Do you think our dogs thing WTF when we come back from the hairdressers?

MJMG2015 · 13/10/2020 13:51

No befire & after Photos? How can we
Possibly say?

The groomer shouldn't have done that, what did you say to them?

It's like when Granny/Nursery cuts a child's hair. It's not on!

Still, it will grow back & might make things a
bit easier over the next few wet weeks?

(Trying to find a silver lining as
you can't glue it back on)

AriettyHomily · 13/10/2020 13:54

Well I would have told the groomer what you wanted regardless of what the computer should have told them.

It will grow back.

BLASTPROCESSING · 13/10/2020 13:55

"What's happened to my dog?"

She's had a haircut. She has not been hurt or abused. She'll be fine and it will grow back.

BiteyShark · 13/10/2020 14:00

You never know you both might like it when you realise brushing a short cut tail is so much easier.

Mine doesn't have the 'breed' cut, he has a puppy short cut and it really does keep him cleaner especially in the rain and mud.

whereiwanttobe · 13/10/2020 14:00

That happened to our spaniel and I was heartbroken! Next time I took him to another groomer, gave clear instructions, I thought, and he came back with no ruff, which is my favourite bit to stroke, and a really rubbish paw and ear trim.

So back to the original one but this time with very clear instructions to leave his tail and ruff alone. It's booked for tomorrow....

pigsDOfly · 13/10/2020 14:01

Oh, thank you both. You've made me feel better knowing others understand.

I know in the scheme of things, especially at the moment, it shouldn't be important but, as you say, Bitey, she doesn't look like her.

And I know (hope) it'll grow back but she looks so bald. Her tail is so much part of her and it's gone.

Yes, maybe dogs do look at us when we've been to the hairdresser, and think we look awful with our different hair. I know I've come back many times from having my hair cut and thought WTF so perhaps the dog does as well Grin

And sorry, meant to say yes his tail did grow back quite quickly, it just looks a bit ragged so needs a very, very tiny trim!

BiteyShark · 13/10/2020 14:07

I find in a week or two either you have got used to it or it has grown enough to not look as if it has just been done.

pigsDOfly · 13/10/2020 14:09

Whereiwanttobe Yes, I will also be clearer next time.

I tell them what I want when I book her in and then reiterate it when I take her to them.

I don't think I've mentioned about not cutting her tail for ages, it's just something that they know there and this is the first time it's happened; it's a small groomers so not many people working there and I've been going there for years.

I'll know to be very specific next time.

BiteyShark I'm sure I'll get used to it until it grows and yes, there will be the advantage that I won't have to remove odd bits of twig and plant out of her tail after a walk.

The first time we took our spaniel for a trim she came home looking like a dalmatian I was like FUCK ME wrong dog? We got used to it but the weirdest part was her paws were a quarter of the size I thought they were and as she had a docked tail (way before it was made illegal) they even trimmed the wisp that was on the end of it! Turns out that dog was way more fur than dog
