Hi all,
Can you hit me with your dog breed suggestions please? A bit about us:
Family of 4, kids age 5 and 10
Fairly active, large garden and walks on our doorstep. Realistically we can go 20-30mkn walk am and a longer 60min in the evening.
Small or medium size breed, minimal moulting
Must be good with kids and happy to spend a little time (2-3 hours tops) alone when this Covid madness is over.
Currently both me and my husband are working from home but we know this might not be forever, however pooch can come to my work with me when I return.
My parents have a cocker and he is wonderful but sooooo needy so maybe not one of those!
Thanks

Schnauzer. Standard for preference but they are hard to find. Miniatures are lovely but a bit noisy, giants are just that -giant.
Don’t moult but will need clipping; very tolerant of erratic schedules . Seem to be happy enough with periods alone. And have gorgeous faces.
They are not terriers but can share some traits, so females are possibly easier, but I only ever lived with a gorgeous standard male.

Until you said minimal shedding I would have suggested a collie or a gun dog like a golden retriever or a setter but they do shed a lot....

I think the whole ‘good with kids’ thing is far more dependant on parental temperament and positive experiences than breed though I would say that collies aren’t always a good match if the children are very loud/boisterous as they can be noise sensitive and find rambunctiousness stressful.

But, I do have a border collie and she’s fantastic with kids.
Not needy and can be left.
Shedding aside, if you find a litter with confident, friendly parents I think they are worth considering.

Tibetan Terrier- medium sized, fun and loyal!
Puppies are hard work, but adults will be calm and loving.

I would look at some of the Native but endangered breeds as many are excellent pets but not bread as no money in breeding them

We do like Glens

For me its a one horse race

Border terrier. Perfect (ish!) Grin

Darklane · 08/10/2020 20:14

Staffie?
I know they look tough characters but, as I’ve often mentioned, whenever we’re at dig shows, always in the terrier section, the ring with THE most children, even babies in prams round, are the Staffie rings.
They really are big softies, sheep in wolf’s clothing.....unlike my lot of dour Scots.

Darklane · 08/10/2020 20:15

Dog shows Blush not dig shows....though with terriers.....????

aureliacecilia · 08/10/2020 20:16

I was going to suggest a whippet but I think they do moult.

hiredandsqueak · 08/10/2020 20:18

Poodle ticks all your boxes.

Darklane · 08/10/2020 20:29

@Funf

But not a Skye....no definitely not a Skye, not that they’re easy to get hold of anyway.
I’ve kept them all my life & much as I adore them would not recommend them to families with small children. Dour Scot doesn’t come near it.
Bolshy, stubborn, hate strangers so if you get visitors or out on walks they will curse & swear at anyone they don’t like & know well. They are very much one person dogs & often won’t even take to others in the family. Once met a chap when I was out walking in Scotland who actually did recognise what my my bunch is & he said they’d got one a year ago & wished they hadn’t. It loved his wife but at best ignored him & at worst just barked at him all the time.
And they take a LOT of grooming..
One of mine

Cavapoo!

I was going to suggest a cocker until I read your last sentence. There's a lot of difference between a show and a working cocker.

Darklane · 08/10/2020 20:40

My son has two working Cockers & they’re lovely dogs, SO affectionate, but they can be a bit crazy at times.....so much energy!

copernicium · 08/10/2020 20:42

Whippet. They do moult but they have so little hair you don't notice.

Miniature poodle

Cuddling57 · 08/10/2020 21:37

A well bred poodle cross. Find a good breeder and put your name on a waiting list. A well bred dog will have a better temperament.
