Best GPS / tracker for dog

Scramblinghealingdreaming · 05/10/2020 15:03

My dog is two and over the last few months has started going off on his own every now and then. He has great recall but when he gets a scent (he is not a hunting breed), he just doesnt hear me.

Fortunately no incidents so far. I will not accept not letting him off lead as his life would be miserable. I am keen to invest in some kind of GPS should the worse happen.

Any recommendations / feedback on different systems would be really appreciated.

Following, my husband wants to get one of these when we get our dog. I'm not yet convinced so interested to hear what others say.

Unfortunately we walk in wooded areas and deep in the countryside and it just couldn't keep up with my dog or couldn't get a signal (this one worked off the phone network) and after a trial period I sent it back as it wasn't accurate or quick enough for what I wanted.

Technology might have moved on since as this was probably about 3 years ago.

I have a Tractive tracker and it is great. I googled them obsessively after my (then) 4 mmonth old puppy took off after a deer, proving that she did indeed have a high prey drive!
Tracker is about £50 and another £50 year's subscription to the GPS.

I wouldn't be without it now... she's 16m now and her recall is generally quite good, but she IS prey driven and if she sees a deer or rabbit.. she's off and it just gives me peace of mind in case she should ever go too far. It can track in updates every few minutes or in real time (via your phone)

Worth every penny imo! We use it everywhere.. woods, fields, etc

Another vote for Tractive, we have 3 of them and can pinpoint the dogs every time. They also have a handy buzzer - we found that if we need one of the dogs to come home quickly we just turn the buzzer on and they come straight back. Brilliant!

Thanks all, looks like Tractive. Looking at reviews, it seems it not perfect but the best on the market. Thanks for your help.

Tractive here too Star

DDogs tractive arrived this week - am amazed and chuffed with it but worried about it clicking off and falling off his collar (he's fairly rumbunctious) so have secured it with a couple of silicone hair bands as well as the holder. Will that do, do you think? Does anyone else think that the holder could be more secure?

StillMedusa · 15/10/2020 13:59

I have mine on my dog's harness so got a strip of velcro and attached it with that.. haven't lost it yet in a year :)

DrGachet · 15/10/2020 17:39

Ah, I take his harness off when he's running loose. I had a look on their website as I thought they might sell something to make it more secure. Have been toying with the idea of cutting the end of a condom off to make a sleeve to go over it and his collar. Bit grim though?

His life might be more miserable if he gets hurt by a car/has an accident while he is roaming. He also might cause an accident. Be responsible and put him on a long line. His recall is not excellent.
