Hello. I am 5 weeks in to life with a dog and need to review my dog walking attire.
What do you wear, is there a coat you recommend, shoes or boots which are great and do I need a hat with a rim or something similar, waterproof trousers etc etc is there stuff you got that you wish you hadnt.
The only thing I have which is great is a half rucksack for all her stuff and things.
All advice and recommendations much appreciated from all the seasoned walkers

I’m a pretty novice dog owner but fairly seasoned walker and in shitey weather unless you’re out all day I’d just wear wellies! They’re easy to put on and off, protect you from a multitude of sins and you can get decent ones fairly cheap. I can certainly walk 5 miles in wellies and decent socks and be very comfy and have nice dry feet at the end. I’d also go head to toe waterproofs if it’s peeing down.

Am looking for a decent solution for cold hands though as have crap circulation and normally wear gloves to walk/run when it gets colder but feel like I might need my fingers free to walk the pup!

I’ve got a north face coat - the type with an outer waterproof and wind proof layer and an inner fleece. So the fleece is used Oct-March ish and the water proof coat used through the summer when raining. All dog poo bags / treats etc in pockets

During the summmer - bumbag with dog poo bags / treats / pace for phone / keys etc

Also have clip on / fold down water bowl for long hot walks which I clip on to coat or bumbag and take water bottle with me so they can have a drink

I have a truly hideous waxed cotton poncho with a hood that I mostly wear.to horrify my DH when walking the dog. Keeps me nice and dry.

dudsville · 02/10/2020 22:29

Summer: ordinary clothes with pockets for poo bags. Bottle of water for dogs to have a drink.

Rainy weather: waterproof with pockets for poo bags, water resistant footwear (2 pairs so you can rotate).

Winter: warm hooded long coat

That's it. Sometimes you'll get wet or muddy or sweaty and have to wash your clothes.

Eckhart · 02/10/2020 22:32

It's good to put some decent quality cushioned insoles in wellies.

fruitpastille · 02/10/2020 23:13

@Chocolateandamaretto I've got a zippo handwarmer that I keep in my pocket on really cold days. If you want fingers free then wrist warmer gloves are good.

Scattyhattie · 02/10/2020 23:16

My dogs aren't wet weather fans so usually wanting to return home more than me.
I wear leggings, craghoppers kiwi trousers or waterproof version, leather walking boots as comfortable, waterproof & fairly cool in summer. If its really muddy I'll put wellies on but I don't find them comfortable for longer walks.
Summer find seasalt Mac is cooler than technical coat, winter Lands end squall is toasty, dry and plenty pockets. I suffer badly when the cold so tend to have lots layers, scarf, hat and gloves, I have also been known to leave fleece PJs on underneath.

I bought myself & Dogwalker a sealskinz waterproof cap which they've said works well, I keep forgetting to put mine on but always buy coats with substantial hoods.

I tend to shove everything in my pockets than take a bag. This is my most useful buy, handsfree walking and if knobdog lunges forwards can keep balanced much easier than if holding the lead. www.sassdogequipment.co.uk/dog-walking-belt/

@Beamur I have what I call my dog walking rain hat (I use when just drizzling) which I once wore to collect my daughter from school. I love it, but she was disgusted that I wore it to collect her!

I have a normal cap for summer use but have ordered myself a sealskinz number for under-hood wearing, off the back of this thread. Hopefully it’ll help keep the rain off my specs too.

All this waterproof gear.. am I the only one who's dog detests going anywhere in the rain? Normal warm clothing works for us as wet days are for quick garden pee's 😆. I usually wear comfy jeggings and duvet style coat in winter. I have some comfy country boots for mud

JonHammIsMyJamm · 03/10/2020 17:42

@midnightstar66, sadly not! Mine is at the front door, giving me the pleading eyes, come rain or shine. We’re out in all weathers.

Ha, no chance.

Mine is out in all weathers - the filthier he can get the better, which mens going out in the wet and wind! I was out today and had to be kitted out with a waterproof jacket with a hood, baseball cap to keep the rain off, overtrousers and wellies Grin

That'll pretty much be my outfit for the next six months or so!

This is what I was expecting when I opted for a british working terrier (Jack Russell) but she tip toes along looking so miserable once you physically drag or carry her away from the front door that I feel guilty and don't bother now 😆

Definitely an individual dog thing! I walk some dogs who can't stand the rain and others who don't give a toss. Took two spaniels and a collie out today and they had a great time Grin

bengalcat · 03/10/2020 18:42

If you get unexpectedly caught in the rain a doggy poobag makes an excellent rainhat .

midnightstar66 · 03/10/2020 18:51

@vanillandhoney I read today that it is the sound of rain that many dogs don't like. I wonder if those with floppier ears are less sensitive to it?! Although mine avoids puddles too and won't paddle so I'm not convinced 😆

I have a beagle - he hates swimming but loves the rain (for walks, heaven forbid you ask him to go for his last wee before bed in the drizzle!)

Sitdowncupoftea · 03/10/2020 19:29

I suppose dog walking clothes depends on where you walk and what dog you have.
I have waterproof ankle height hiking boots. I have waterproof coat and trousers. I wear a peaked hat under my hood to keep rain off my face. I have a waterproof bumbag and I wear weightlifter style gloves as I use a longline. I have thermals for winter walks. I don't have designer gear just good practical. I have just got in now after a good walk it was chucking it down. I had to go through the horses and cows then ankle deep flood water. The dogs loved it only me out as the fairweather walkers don't like to get their barbour wellies mucky .

AlwaysLatte · 03/10/2020 19:35

I have a cheap longish waterproof coat from Asda for dog walking, plus my Wellibobs, that's it really - normal jeans underneath which I change if they get dirty.

AlwaysLatte · 03/10/2020 19:36

Having said that, it's for light drizzle. She won't go out in the rain.

polkadotpjs · 03/10/2020 21:20

I need a new longer coat. My oversized waterproof is mid thigh so all the water just dripped off and saturated my legs tonight. Urgh. I'm not a cold person so not in need of a thick coat but a waterproof is important

StillMedusa · 03/10/2020 22:01

I wear a long regatta warm waterproof coat with huge pockets, filled with treats, poo bags and my phone.
Merrel short boots for wet grass/mild weather and Ariat leather wellies for today's type of weather. Woolly hat or a baseball cap if it's raining as I wear glasses . Cheap waterpoof trousers if it's dire.. hate them as they rustle!

Now off to look at dry Roamers.. might ask for a pair for Xmas!!!

SnaccidentsHappen · 03/10/2020 22:15

Usually some sort of exercise clothes, waterproof jacket and my muck boots. I don't like hats so have a Willy headband thing that covers my ears too.

Definitelyrandom · 03/10/2020 23:02

We have a greyhound who is fine with going out in the rain (with a raincoat) so for me it’s waterproof walking boots, a heavy duty poncho and a Harris tweed cap. Not elegant, but effective.
