Vets tonight....question about vaccinations

Ddog off to the vets tonight.

His boosters were due late Feb. Started new job so was a little late taking him, vets announced they weren't doing vaccinations during lockdown. Had to take him for ear infection they wouldn't give then as they didn't know what treatment he would need...ended up being steroids and antibiotic and antifungal drops. So they didn't do then either.

Struggled to get an appointment and by the time I went beginning of September they insisted that as it was over 6 months overdue I needed to start again...even though they were less than a week overdue.

Accepted this but not happy.

Going again today for second dose. Apparently I should have gone last week (wasn't aware that I was told 2 to 3 weeks for second dose...ddog is 7 so a long time since then and I have forgotten!...also ddog had to go in on his own so was passed back to me outside ) and the receptionist said I might need to start again.

So what is the truth about dog vaccinations? He has been done every year and I can’t see that starting yet again will be necessary ..... as we were only a week over the 6 months I am not even sure that I needed to start again last time!

Thank you for any insight!

Technically you do have to start again BUT it is highly likely your dog is covered anyway.

Titre test will prove this or you can just have the second set of jabs then titre test to see that your dog will be covered or not bother if you are not too concerned.

It is highly likely that your dog will be covered if they have had all their jabs for 7 years. The vet however has to go by the guidelines of the drug company

PollyRoulson thank you for your reply....yeah I suppose I am just going to have to go with it if thats what the vet says....she may say it will be ok as we are just 4 weeks off the first dose.

Ddog loves going to the vets (treats!) So he won't mind! Just my purse but he is worth it Wink

What a shame. I got them to do my dog during lockdown because they are only supposed to be safe 3 months past the due date and I pointed out to them that my dog ran around for hours every day in a forest full of deer and foxes and was at high risk of picking up horrible diseases once her immunisation was ineffective. I was willing to wait the extra 3 months but was quite anxious about her being unprotected thereafter. They agreed with me, fortunately.

Thank you for your response! Yeah it was a shame but I am not going to leave him unprotected so just have to suck it up! All went well had second jab tonight and thats it done! Bless him he loves the vets he likes their treats Grin

The leptospirosis vaccine is only licensed for use within a very specific time frame, basically they don't guarantee its efficacy if you're outwith these times. The others it would depend on which ones he's had previously and when. Distemper and parvo are given every 3 years but always in the 1st year vaccinations after puppy hood.
The 6 month rule again is what the vaccine manufactors recommend. Vets don't really make these decisions, if they give a vaccine outwith the licensing rules you would need to sign an off licence consent form and accept the risks.

Controversial but my dogs breeder only vaccinates for parvo, nothing else.

I did give mine all vaccinations and boosters, I stopped giving her boosters after she started to get what looked a lot like a seizure of sorts afterwards.

Any future pup will get their puppy vaccinations, maybe the 1 year booster and then that’s it for me.

Guidelines will say you need to re-start, but that doesn't mean he's not still covered. It's just vets have to follow the guidance from the drug company. A titre-test would prove he was covered but it's often cheaper to get the jabs.

Also, with regards to things like daycare, kennels etc. dogs will need to be vaccinated and so the vet has to be able to say "yes, they've been vaccinated according to the official guidance". It also covers you in terms of insurance as most companies won't pay out if your pets' condition could have been prevented by being vaccinated.

Lepto also needs to be done annually as I believe it's not as long-lasting as the others.
