Help me find a rescue dog

I posted a similar thread a couple of months ago, but our situation has changed.

So the home we have to offer has someone at home all the time, youngest child is 11, no allergies and everyone has lived with a dog previously. No other pets, other than the odd gigantic spider ! enclosed garden with 6ft high fencing.

The sort of dog we would like is people friendly, dog friendly would be great but not essential, medium to large, prefer short haired or medium hair, willing to work with a trainer for anything else. Age wise not a puppy, any age up to 8 ish depending on breed.

Dogs Trust? You can search by area and requirements.

Tia (greyhound rescue) Doncaster. Our last rescue was 8, and he's now snoring between the sofa and the radiator. Need next to no exercise - built for speed, not for stamina. Not met a sighthound yet that doesn't prefer to just sleep most of the time.

There are many breed specific rescues out there and smaller rescues if you have an idea of what breed you are after.

Chimney Farm dog rescue. Very good at matching the right dog to the right family.

Dana's rescue dogs - she rescues dogs in Romania and they are brought over. Our girl is from there and she's ace! You can find them on Facebook.

EGLR - but its better to watch their FB than the website as it is updated more slowly. All the dogs are fostered, so their families know them really well (and their failings, stares hard at foster puppies)

Chat to all your local rescues. I know some, both big and small rescues, have demand greatly outstripping supply - leaving only dogs who need more work and adult-only homes (one adult, up a mountain in Wales with no visitors or other animals please).

Puppies can get over 800 applications.

At some point in the new year this demand will crash and loads of dogs will come flooding back into rescues when people either return to more normal working hours out of the house, or lose employment due to the impending recession.

Loads of Greyhounds seem to be sticking in rescue though, if you don't have cats, an ex-racer could work very well! Even the big rescues have Greyhounds sticking where all the smaller fluffier things have flown out the door.

We had a greyhound who was great with cats so even that could work. Some rescues cat test which could be ok but ours has actually lived with a cat before.

Will likely be an excess of greyhounds flowing into rescue as a few tracks have permanently closed & trainers struggled with costs so gave up due to covid.
www.greyhoundtrust.org.uk/ are also lots of other independent greyhound rescues, some that home lurchers too.
Lurchers are similar but can be bit higher energy, some mixes bit more dog then cat-like but with good snooze function. I've a staffy lurcher, she's more greyhound energy but very people oriented & cuddly, also inherited the staffy talking & lickyness.

What sort of breed traits tend to appeal to you or really dislike? What level of daily exercise (easier to underestimate & end up with a fitter dog than one that needs more than have time for)? Do you want a dog you need to be interactive with & providing mental stimulation or one that's more happy to be hanging out in the background? Some people really enjoy training & dog sports.

Many Tears Rescue in South Wales have mainly dogs rescued from puppy farms . They foster out dogs all over the country so you won't necessarily have to travel to Wales . Many different breeds available.
