Not for want of trying... Always a wee / poo in the morning (5am - last went out at 10-10.30pm).

Will go to sit quietly at the door in the day if he needs to go, but if you miss it he will usually just then wee on the carpet, rather than scrabble / yelp / attempt to attract your attention.

He is taken out frequently and given a treat whenever he ‘goes‘ but I’m not sure he has totally made the connection.

Any ideas? He isn’t the only dog in the house but doesn’t seem to take any guidance from the others...

Great advice, thanks all! I think it’s the food that’s the issue. Will amend the schedule and keep fingers crossed!

We also have a 6 month (nearly 7) old puppy

He arrived during a spell of amazing weather and we all lived in the garden.
When it rains he stands by the door, looks up to say Really? with a disbelieving look!

We go out with the umbrella and stand there with him, again the side eye.

Then he comes in and wees on the floor.
He has been worse this week as he has a baddy leg and can't go on his walks to the park.

We are thinking of building a shelter that covers the back door!
I suppose we can have people in for a cuppa if it isn't completely enclosed. 😉😊🐕‍🦺💖

Also what breed is he as some breeds are slower to grasp idea

EffYouSeeKaye · 02/10/2020 23:43

@IamEarthymama same!! Such a fair weather dog. He hadn’t seen rain until he was almost 3 months old and that set his training right back.

He’s a Jack Russell. Not so much slow on the uptake usually as quick to work out what they can get away with...

Our pup is also a Jack Russell a total fair weather dog, as is her mum so I don't think having rain at the start would have made much of a difference 😆. Remember as small dog will have a tiny bladder so will be longer before they are able to hold for longer periods. Mine was also not overly keen on her food so I used it for training as I suggested earlier and she's a lot better with it now. I tend to put a small topper on like some dried sprats or liver or a small amount of fish/chicken and it starts her eating it then she seems to keep going. Terriers are notoriously fussy and want anything but the dog food.

Update

3rd completely dry night in a row now by simply putting food down at breakfast & dinnertime (for about an hour) then removing bowls until the next mealtime.

So think that’s sorted it! Thanks for all the advice to that effect. Seems obvious now Blush but so glad it’s fixed.

It happens. We have a few things where we have felt a bit silly when the realisation hits us. We’ve never had a dog before, so while I prepared as much as I could, it still doesn’t prepare you for actual puppyhood.
