Dog saying hello in the night

GiraffeNecked · 30/09/2020 09:51

She's 10 months old. And once a night she'll pop up on the bed to say hello. Gives DH a lick and thumps her tail against me and then goes to lie down on the end of the bed.

She also moves around a lot in her sleep - so corner of room, her bed, the hello on our bed, the hall.

She does this when sleeping downstairs too.

How do we persuade her that the hello in the night isn't welcome.

I think we've gone too far with her sleeping upstairs to move her into the kitchen now.

She will go back to her bed when told to. But feels the need for the 'hello!' first.

Awww - she sounds lovely! Is she cold? My old springer used to come and give me a little nose boop if she was cold and I'd lift up the quilt for her to curl up against me. I miss it! Our current boy often does an opportunistic check at about 4am in case it's breakfast time but goes back to bed if ignored.

She’s just looking for reassurance. Are you sure you can’t just give her a quick cuddle and send her on her way?

LaChatte · 30/09/2020 13:10

One of my cats comes up to me in the middle of the night, sticks his tongue as far up my nostril as he can, meows loudly then fucks back off down stairs again. EVERY SINGLE NIGHT. Your DDog sounds lovely.

smallpotatoes7 · 30/09/2020 13:14

Do you like the dog? Surely it's nice of her to come and see you before bed. My dogs spend an hour on the bed watching tv with me before bed every night then we put them to bed.

StitchInTimeSavesNine · 30/09/2020 13:14

My dog does this every night, we are just used to it now. She seems to wake up and be so happy that we exist she just needs to let us know.

She is a rescue dog and when we got her she had been sleeping on a concrete floor without even a rag for comfort so I can't bring myself to mind.

GiraffeNecked · 30/09/2020 13:15

The cat sometimes joins in. He likes a dance on your head if he's woken up hungry or come back in from a prowl. I don't mind locking him downstairs.

The puppy though, yes it's sweet. And I'm sure its just reasurrance that we haven't been kidnapped by aliens or gone out without her.

DH gives her a quick cuddle and goes back to sleep and snoring - I'm left lying awake wandering - 'what the hell just happened there?'.

It's 2 or 3 am she does it.... not just before bed.

Mine wakes me up in the night for biscuits. Thing is I reinforce it my giving him them in my sleepy state! He barks and scratches my bedroom door but when I get up he stands back away from the door wagging his tail, saying, no, I don't need to go out. Just biscuits!! He stands by the door if he wants out. Sometimes I wake up. Give him biscuits. Then go back to sleep. Seconds later. Up again. Yes this time I do need to go out. And of course don't forget my biscuit for coming back into the house. And my bedtime biscuits when we get back upstairs..... I'm a right sucker aren't I Hmm

MagicalThinking · 30/09/2020 13:18

Mine normally starts out the night on her bed but is normally cuddling up to me by the morning. It's cute. They like company at night.

SoddingWeddings · 30/09/2020 13:21

Stop the dog sleeping in your room at all would be my approach. She might settle better downstairs, or at least can prowl without waking the humans. Baby gate on the stairs to enforce it.

BiteyShark · 30/09/2020 14:52

Mine sometimes gets up, shakes his ears loudly and then gives me a sniff so close I can feel his whiskers on my face. He then collapses on top of me (he sleeps on the bed).

I can see that it bothers you but actually I find it comforting Grin

I'm not sure any of you are helping! :)

I do like to know she's ok. I'd just rather she wasnt quite so enthusiastic in her checking we are ok. Well not at 2am.

Ours sleeps in the bed and regularly wakes me up by licking my nose when he wants to get back under the covers Grin

Sorry to say I really don't mind it and quite like the snuggles - especially in winter when I use him as a footwarmer!

AmICrazyorWhat2 · 30/09/2020 15:02

Ours sleeps in the room opposite ours, rather than in our room. He likes to be on the same floor as us but knows he has his own room! He snores and snuffles during the night, and occasionally prowls about so it’s better for everyone.

Could you make your puppy a nice bed close to your room, but not actually in it?

BiteyShark · 30/09/2020 16:27

This!

When I used to let my dog (RIP) sleep on the bed, he would do this if he was cold so he could get under the duvet.

I don’t let my two sleep in the bed now Grin. I have a carpet in the room and they are likely to wet the floor rather than wake me up so I darent risk it

Ours cant get out of the crate
