House to small for medium dog?

We own a 3 bedroom semi detached house. It’s not big, we have a kitchen/dining room and a livingroom but we have quite a big garden.

I really really want a golden retriever in the near future but DH thinks our house is too small 😩😔

Is this even a thing? I’m pretty sure ddog could fit in our bed/on our sofa.

Our friends who live in a terraced house with a tiny courtyard garden have a golden retriever. He gets long walks every day and frequent trips to the countryside. He's a very happy dog!

I think it's more about whether you could deal with having a relatively large, clumsy dog in a relatively small space.

We have a semi detached 3 bed with ok sized garden and we did fine with a 40kg labradoodle. We’ve now got a 10 month old goldendoodle who is 25kg and honestly the labradoodle was easier. It’s less about size and more about how excitable they are. You can have huge dogs that go on one walk and are settled the rest of the day. You can have small dogs that zoom around for hours on end and destroy every room!
I’d more look at personality of dog vs size.

They are large dogs and as pups can be quite bouncy. Do you have space for that?
I would worry more about the hair TBH!

Thedarksideofthemoon30 · 27/09/2020 21:50

The hair doesn’t bother me too much, I Hoover numerous times a day anyway and we have wooden floors lol.

We live semi rural so long walks are absolutely fine.

You can’t take a puppy on long walks though. I have wolfhounds. Recently watched a lady nearly knocked flat by her bouncy GR puppy. They can be VERY exuberant (and a bit clumsy?!) If you have space in the garden for mad playing (and don’t mind cleaning up when the dog comes in wet and muddy) then that’s fine! Grin

Op your house is fine! Mine is a very small three bed house and I have a dog the same size of a Labrador, it doesn't really matter how big your house is as long as there getting two big walks a day.

We're in a 2 bed semi and have a very large high-energy shepherd/mastiff mutt, he fits just fine!

I know a bloke in a two (maybe 3) bed terrace who has two pointers. Not small, and both v energetic working dogs

Sometimes I think a smaller house/garden works in a dog's favour. There is less temptation to think of house or garden time as exercise or stimulation and so a increased liklihood of the dog getting adequate walks and activities elsewhere.

Not always - there are diligent owner with big gardens and shitty ones with little gardens, also. But, on balance, I think a half decent owner with a smaller garden is likely to make more of an effort to entertain the dog in other ways.

As pp says - if there is a bit of space outdoors for the zoomies to take place (ha!), you are prepared to put in the walking and you can cope wit always having to step over a big dog in a small house, then I can't see that it would be an issue, tbh.

@booandbumpp A 40 kilo labradoodle that must be some size. My malamute isn't that big and hes not small.

Our neighbour in the other half of a small 3 bed semi had a succession of golden retrievers. One of those semis where 3rd 'bedroom' won't fit a full size bed to give you an idea.

I always used to hear them vacuuming twice a day!
