Propalin vomiting

Hello fellow dog people!

I have 2 year old collie bitch who developed spaying incontinence about a month ago (feels really unfortunate for the poor girl! ). The vet prescribed propanil. Yesterday was the first dosages and last night she seemed sleepy and she threw up at 5am (last dosage was at 11pm). She was really lethargic this morning whereas she usually wakes us up barking at 7am.

She has been eating rabbit/small animal poop in the garden which we have a lot of all year long, so hard to avoid. Sometimes I think the dogs do get a bit sick from the rabbit poop...but so far this dog has been like cast iron except for the pee problem (I don't know when she was spayed she was 1 when got her).

So... I don't know what to think. Has anyone's dog reacted like this after the first day of propalin?

I would give your vet a call.

I have had bitches on propalin and never had any vomiting - I would want to check that out

okay thanks. i was going to call anyway but it's good to know other people's experiences.

Out of interest, Hawwy, how old was she when you spayed her?

I am weighing up pros and cons of spaying our current adult bitch, but also the youngster coming along behind.

@Hawwy gastrointestinal signs (vomiting and diarrhoea) is one of the side effects of Propalin. Contact your vet as there are other medication options that can be tried.
@GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman a very extensive study in the early noughties looked retrospectively at several thousand bitches and found that age of neutering had no impact on the onset of spay incontinence - the bitches who were going to get it did so regardless of age unless they are a carriage breed ( Dalmatian, Weimaraner etc) in which case they should have their first season.

Lonecat, yes, thank you, I think I know that study. There's a more recent one from UC Davis which breaks the impacts of neutering down by breed in more detail. It doesn't have all breeds, though, and I'm just always curious enough to gather more detail - anecdote is not data n'all that, but interesting all the same.
