How do you keep carpets clean when you have a dog?

Our carpets are starting to look quite dirty (especially the steps). I hate this. I have young children as well as a dog. I am curious what other dog owns do, besides get rid of carpets! Do you get your carpets professionally cleaned a few times a year?

Our dog attracts dirt and wiping her feet does not get rid of it all. I would like to ban her from coming upstairs, but the rest of the family does not want this. Of course I love having her upstairs, but I just hate having dirty looking carpets (mainly the stairs, but it looks so bad when you enter the house as its the first thing you see).

We got rid of all our carpets when we got a dog. Hard floors all the way! I think carpets are always a haven for dirt, whether you have a dog or not tbh.

NotSuchASmugMarriedNow1 · 22/09/2020 14:17

robot vacuum twice a day

donkeyridesinsummer · 22/09/2020 14:18

I would imagine it's pretty much impossible to have clean carpets and a dog. We have wooden floors and now no rugs also as they were ruined and smelt terrible.

SqidgeBum · 22/09/2020 14:19

I use Dr Beckermann carpet cleaner to get the main stains of dirt off from our spaniel, and I hoover a lot, but, in my experience, when it comes to carpets and dogs, you just lower your standards. Its like having a child and wanting your house to be neat all the time. It just part of the decision to get a dog.

That or your rip your carpets out and put in hardwood everywhere ..... which the dog will scratch lol.

Very few carpets plus a dog that gets bathed very regularly. I really don’t understand people that don’t wash their dog or just give them a towel rub.

Medievalist · 22/09/2020 14:21

We tended to have carpets with a low pile that could be cleaned easily. More recently we've had wooden floors but these are covered with large rugs which can be replaced regularly.

Hard floors aren't great for elderly dogs - if they slip on them they can really hurt themselves. Or young ones for that matter if they're prone to charging about when excited. We currently have a dog recovering from a cruciate ligament op and have covered everywhere with carpet for him.

awsomer unless I wash our dog every day, washing the dog does not help much (except for the day she is washed!). Her fur attracts dirt unfortunately. We get her groomed every 6-8 weeks and have her trimmed short, and I wash her in between a couple of times...rinse her feet if she has been in the mud.

I am hoping the professional cleaners can revive the carpets and perhaps I can try wiping her paws more diligently. I guess its mainly my dh who is lazy and doesnt wipe the dogs paws which created the most dirt in the carpet. ARGH!

As for hardwood floors, those also get so dirty with dogs....we have a cleaner twice a week that vacuums and mops and yet you can see the dirt and dust on it most days...I should probably sweep daily....and mop once or twice as well!

We have very few carpets but the ones we do are very short pile and also are similar in colour to our dogs to hide some of it Grin

We have dirt trapper mats in every doorway which helps a tiny bit!

Dogsarebetterthanpeople · 22/09/2020 15:17

I only have carpet on my stairs.
Everywhere else is hard floor.

I hate my carpet, it’s a horrible dirty beige colour.
I vacuum it once, sometimes twice a day and that keeps it looking alright.
When I get my dream white stair carpet I’ll invest in a carpet cleaner and pray that that plus daily vacuuming keeps it nice 🤞🏻

I vacuum my hardwood everyday, very rarely mop it and it always looks presentable.
I’ve often heard people say they only vacuum once or twice a week, I can only assume these people do not have dogs or children.
If I vacuumed my floor only once or twice a week the amount of hair and crumbs and dust doesn’t bear thinking about!

Our cocker goes to the groomers every 4-6 weeks for a puppy type cut which involves short legs, paws etc (no long hair at all really. I think this cuts down the mud and dirt a lot.

PollyRoulson · 22/09/2020 15:29

My dogs stay in the dog room until they are clean and dry. They are brushed daily and feet cleaned and dry then they are allowed in. Hair is kept short and neat around feet and up to hocks. Tails and eyes are checked daily for most of the forest and fields they seem to keep in them!

I do not have carpets downstairs and they do not come upstairs (for exactly the reason that I hate housework but like a clean house!)

I use a robot hoover every day and hoover in between if needed.

I do not mop my sitting room floors (should I?) . Kitchen and dog room gets a once over every day.

True, my dog’s leg feathering is cut off up to the stopper pad on the front, up to the hocks at the back and I regularly cut all the fur out from her paw pads/between her toes and keep her nails short.
I think it does help a little

myworkingtitle · 22/09/2020 15:32

We don’t have carpets downstairs and the dog isn’t allowed upstairs. I do sweep or vacuum at least once a day though else hair just migrated through the house anyway...

fairydustandpixies · 22/09/2020 15:34

Sorry, no help, but no carpets, I have laminate floors, a few washable rugs and vacuum every day.

TheTempest · 22/09/2020 15:41

Hardwood throughout here too (4 dogs and one 11yo DD). We sweep 2x a day, mop every couple of days and hoover once a week ish. My house is definitely not a show home however!

vanillandhoney · 22/09/2020 19:36

We have a dog and three cats - so lots of potential for fur.

I vacuum twice a day. The cats aren't allowed upstairs so it's just the living/dining room to do. Upstairs gets done once a week as the dog only goes up there to sleep.

Hard floors are swept twice a day and steam-mopped twice a week or so. I also have a setting on the mop to do carpets and soft furnishings and I do that about once a month or so. I also vacuum the sofa (the vacuum comes with a little attachment for it) weekly and wash all the blankets and cushion covers once a week.

Our cats are all indoors-only so no real potential for them to get wet and mucky, and the dog is low-shedding and gets bathed once a month, and isn't allowed on the carpets until he's clean and dry!

lazylinguist · 22/09/2020 19:52

I hoover and mop my hard floors every other day, which is only just enough tbh but I'm damned if I'm doing it every bloody day! There's no way around it though. Either lower your standards or clean more often!

MrsTumbletap · 23/09/2020 14:41

We have cream carpets pretty much throughout and don't seem to have an issue.

Does your dog have fluffy paws? Do they collect a lot of muck?

After a wet walk I will always wipe her paws or even after a wee in the garden if she has muddy paws we wipe them. We have rugs over the sofa we wash weekly and she sits on them a lot but even those dont really get dirty. More dog smelly.

Bath her once a month.

Moondust001 · 23/09/2020 15:03

I have a Shark vacuum and a carpet washer. Plus a steamer for the tiled / hard floors. And I recently discovered an item called LeBrush which I have fallen madly in love with. Not quite as much as I am in love with my VERY long haired Border Collie, but nearly! It's God's gift to dog owners - the LeBrush, not the Border Collie!

doodleygirl · 23/09/2020 15:25

My girl is allowed upstairs but only when she is clean. If she is dirty from her walk I clean her paws, wait for her to dry then brush. She is then free to roam Grin

Worth a try?

ruthieness · 23/09/2020 17:52

I have not tried it but someone on here said they wipe stair carpets with baby wipes and it works to keep clean and pick up hair.

Sheepareawesome · 23/09/2020 17:56

I just decided to stop caring tbh. It hasn't been a problem ever since!

Chocolateandamaretto · 23/09/2020 18:44

We have hard floors downstairs. Dog not allowed upstairs!

cjpark · 23/09/2020 19:10

cream carpets throughout too! Dog gets bathed once week, vacuum daily and carpet clean 6 mthly. Helps that ddog is a shorthaired small low shed breed too that hates anything wet or muddy.
