Ddog and I go out for 4 or 5 short walks a day – he's getting on a bit and there's some lovely spaces for a little run around very close to my house, so it helps me clear my head from work and keeps him active.

Between my house and the little field at which our normal routes all start there's a big house where a German Shepherd sits on the balcony all day and all night. He's fairly young, I think, and seems to be kept as a guard dog. He can get down from the balcony into their small garden, but since there's a high fence all around, he spends all day on the balcony, barking constantly at every person with a dog who passes. I hear him all the time, from 7am until late at night, and I've never seen him out for a walk with his owners (all the dog walkers around here know one another, since we tend to come out at the same times of day – it's a hot country here).

Today Ddog and I had just reached the little field and he was having a sniff around, on leash –I never let him off until we get to a semi-enclosed area and I can see there's no risk of cars or unknown dogs around.

Suddenly I see something out of the corner of my eye and the dog from the balcony was charging towards us with his hackles up – before I knew it he was on top of my dog, snarling and going for his neck.

All the logic left my head (Ddog's had a hell of a year and I'm very protective of him) and I literally roared, grabbed the dog by the scruff of his neck with both my hands and threw him off (he had no collar on). He yelped and went pelting back away toward his house. The owner appeared on the street outside his house and yelled across to ask if everything was OK, but unfortunately I was still in panic mode and couldn't get my words together to give him a piece of my mind (I speak the language here fairly well but when I'm angry it's really hard work to get my words out properly). So I just stared at him in disbelief and said "What do you mean is everything OK? Your dog just attacked my dog!" He said he was sorry and I couldn't engage any further – I just turned and walked off.

DDog's OK, luckily –I carried on slowly with our walk to let us both let off some steam and he was a bit wobbly, but no physical damage.

I'm just so cross, disappointed with myself for not taking it up properly with the owner, conscious that it wasn't smart to jump in to protect DDog when I could have been bitten myself (although frankly, I'd take a bite if it kept him safe)... and pissed off with this idiot owner who clearly only keeps this poor dog as a four-legged security system.

And now I'm going to be on alert every time I pass that house, just in case the owner leaves the gate open again.

I don't even fully know what I'm posting for, to be honest –I'm just really upset and cross.

That's so scary. So glad you were able to look after your dog. We've been charged up to at growled at twice in the last two weeks. Both times I was able get between before any contact could happen, but both times the owners just said stupid things like "oh its friendly really". The first time I managed to "when your dog charges and growls it's frightening", I wasn't smiling and the owner just looked at me utterly baffled. The second time was tonight, again charging and growling, again I had to ask the owner to get their dog (both times these dogs were in a face off with me not moving away and unresponsive to calls grin the owners), again the owner failed to see that this was unacceptable behaviour. Because I end up going from calm and happy to defending mine from an attack it leaves me shaky and speechless. I'd love to have the presence of mind to let the owners have it.

Kanaloa · 20/09/2020 21:35

That must have been so frightening. It was very brave of you to pull the dog away from yours, don’t think I could have done that!

Is there anywhere you can report this dog? It seems poorly trained and possibly dangerous, and next time it attacks a dog or a person they might not be so lucky.

Sunnydaysstillhere · 20/09/2020 21:39

Report it the police and local dog warden. Imagine a dc walking a ddog...

ladybee28 · 20/09/2020 22:23

@Sunnydaysstillhere unfortunately in the country where I live there's no such thing as a dog warden, and the police won't take any action over something like this. If it had actually bitten ME, that would have been one thing, but a situation like today's they'd just nod and then forget it as soon as I left the station.

@Kanaloa it was more autopilot than brave – I'd done it before I had time to think.

@dudsville that's awful – and it really is so frustrating when your mind goes to jelly in the moment. I might have to start rehearsing some important sentences so they're on the tip of my tongue if there's a 'next time'. And maybe start carrying a big bat (baseball, not vampire).

I just feel shit for DDog - I took him out again just now for an evening wee and there was a growly little dog on a leash passing our house, and DDog growled back. I've never heard him growl at anything before; poor thing must be preparing on some level in case it happens again Sad

Totally sympathise. Happened to us once. Dog snarling and slathering at the end of its lead trying to get to my lovely lab as we passed by. Didn’t get more than twenty feet when I heard furious barking and whipped round to see it pelting at us off lead. Before it launched itself at my boy I got between them, got my foot under it and propelled it into the bushes. It just stood there looking utterly shocked. The owner slunk over and grabbed hold of it and never said a bloody word. I practically growled at him ‘Get that bloody thing on a lead!’ Pulled the muscle down the back of my leg and had to hobble back to the car but I had no idea whether it was going to hurt my lovely dog or not. Idiot fucking owners. Hmm

RedHelenB · 20/09/2020 22:28

Keep getting him used to interacting with other dogs again. Bit like getting back on a horse straight away

The other dog owner seemed concerned from your description so hopefully the incident will have shaken him up enough to ensure the gate isnt left open again.

Sitdowncupoftea · 20/09/2020 23:51

@ladybee28 I live in the country and regardless you can still report the dog. I'm not sure if you have a parish council report it to them. Also also councils have a dog warden regardless of where you live. Which ever council you pay your council tax is yours. You need to report it they will deal with it. Next time it could be a child.

AlexaShutUp · 20/09/2020 23:59

The OP doesn't live in the UK, there are no dog wardens where she lives.

OP, I hope that you and ddog are ok.Flowers

ladybee28 · 21/09/2020 00:30

@Sitdowncupoftea as @AlexaShutUp said, I think you misread my post. I don't live in THE country, I live in another country where councils and parishes and dog wardens are not a thing. But I appreciate the level of concern that I'm guessing lies behind your tone.

@MsAdoraBelleDearheartVonLipwig sounds like you're speedy in an emergency too! It's such a shame when you know it's not the dog's fault, but you can't kick the owner Grin

@RedHelenB I hope you're right. Unfortunately he wasn't concerned enough to come over to me and DDog and check on us –he just yelled over from outside his fence... but maybe that was no bad thing, given my wobbly state of pissed-off. We'll go play with his pooch friends in the morning and hopefully that'll ease whatever anxiety this has sparked.

Really appreciate everyone's reassurance and experiences –I do feel a bit better now!

@ladybee28 I understand now. I'm sure what ever country you in there must be some law. If not change your walking route.

Besom · 21/09/2020 13:45

What a horrible experience! I don't think there is anything else you can or should do about ir.
