My hound was terrified of the car when we got her, a lot of hard work last year got her into the car, and travelling on the back seat (in her harness) but since lock down she seems to have forgotten everything and is back to being stressed out again, panting all the time. DH sits with her in the back, but we went to Somerset jast week, and she was by herself, and definately not happy. Looks like we're back to square one, has anyone any ideas on calming her down? And while I'm here, what's the best harness you've used? Thanks!

Our greyhound prefers the boot and dislikes the back seat. If it's a long journey I put her bed or a duvet in for her to snuggle up in. She also likes classic fm!

Thanks Shoes she used to go in the boot in my other car, but it worried me that if we got rear ended she's get the worst of it. She wasn't keen on that either! She has classic fm on when she has to stay at home!

Make daily trips to the car with her while it’s parked not going anywhere. Go in. Sit down for seconds only. She eats treat. Leave. Keep this up for many days.

She then begins to associate the car with treats and not going anywhere. It’s a nice place. Especially if the treats are high value like real chicken.

After a week of this make her sit for one minute before she gets her treat. Repeat all week.

Then two minutes the next week etc. You can see where this is going. Basically take it slow. If that’s too slow then speed it up a little but if she ever seems stressed go back a step.

After sitting in the car happily you can sit in the car with the engine on.

Then you can step it up to being able to drive out if the driveway or up the street and park it after about one minute of driving only and go for a walk, then back in the car and home or you put her in the house while you move the car back to your house.

A little every day. With treats. And a nice reward walk after. Even if you only drive ten feet.

Building up gradually works, I’ve done it with a horse who was terrified of travelling. It worked fine.

Good luck.
