I took Bella out this morning and got to thinking that dog names seem to have trends much like baby names do. So after seeing Poppy, Alfie, Colin, Archie and another Bella I tried to remember the dog's names from my childhood and can't remember hearing them for years.
So does anybody know a Shep, Beauty, Benjy or Blackie now? What other names do you remember from years ago?

Our dog is Bonzo, which I think is quite a retro name. It's in honour of the drummer from Led Zeppelin (DH's choice).

Mitzi was The Name for Yorkshire terriers when I was little - they all seemed to be 121 years old and properly grumpy.

I like Fido. In the words of the Baby Names board, it's due a revival.

WhoWouldHaveThoughtThat · 13/09/2020 16:30

@Pomegranatemolasses

Surely that should be in honour of the
Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band

We have a Bonzo as well - named after the original Bonzo by George Studdy although he is known as Bonzo Doo-Dah Dog.

nicky7654 · 13/09/2020 18:30

I grew up with a Blackie, Jeffrey and Rosie. My dogs now are called Layla and Eric.

@moosemama

Trixie, Shandy and Brandy were favourites where I grew up in the 70’s. My grandparents called every dog they owned Lucky. Confused
I think this is another generational thing - I remember, growing up in the 70s/80s, that my DGP and various aunts/uncles would just get 'another' Whisky/Trixie/Lassie when one died. DGP had four 'Lassies', all the same, one after another. DH has similar childhood memories of dogs becoming 'New Shep' or 'New Meg', then just 'Meg' and 'Shep' again. They were loved, but they were just dogs who ate what was left from dinner on top of their Winalot and sometimes slept outdoors in kennels or were left outside shops.

Whereas my dogs tend to be ridiculously indulged family members with private health care and carefully chosen diets and an inner life, and the thought of replacing them with another dog with the same name seems weirdly... mean.

toiletpaper · 13/09/2020 19:22

There was a Jack Russell on my street growing up who was constantly roaming (the 90's), he was called Randy. Didn't think it was weird until I grew up and realised what it meant Grin
