Miniature poodles clipping or Jack Russell

Hello

As I have reduced my working hours i am very keen to now get a puppy. DH retired so between us both there will always someone there. I have had dogs before, border collie, so am happy re training.

I am torn between a JR and miniature poodle. I

having reviewed poodles there coats seem to be a lot of work, i would intend clipping out myself,i do DH hair with clipper and am confident that i could do the poodle, or not ?

Would send to professional a few times a year

Cost would be a factor 're grooming that's why i would do it myself, dog would want for nothing in other areas we are both active walkers

Thoughts welcome

😂Jrt glitter!

k1233 · 15/09/2020 10:39

@Fifer2020 you need to pick your breeder carefully and ask lots of questions about the parents. My boy is 5 years old and no issues.

I was tossing up between a westie (white) and Scottie (black or wheaten). The breeder I got my boy from had both and has said the scotties are sharper. Westies are just little loves and so rambunctious.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 16/09/2020 13:18

I love terriers, we have got a Jrt cross Yorkshire terrier and he's a fab dog.

We have a cat who malts loads more than the dog does. Our dog is friendly, trainable (clever which can be a good or bad thing!!) and will take as much exercise as you offer him.

Personally all the poodles I know are quite yappy and high maintenance, they're not a breed I'd go for. Have you considered the smaller collie types? I think Shelties are lovely.

Here's a pic of my lovely boy.

@tabulahrasa

Oh also - clipping dogs, much much harder than clipping people.
Hell yes.

I clip DH's hair but honestly wouldn't even like to think what BiteyDog would look like if I tried 😆

tabulahrasa · 16/09/2020 16:31

In fairness - dogs care not when you mess up though... lol

"Oh also - clipping dogs, much much harder than clipping people."

This. At least people will sit still. Good luck clipping a wriggling, squirming dog...

ElspethFlashman · 16/09/2020 16:38

As an ex JRT owner, I wouldn't have gotten one at 61 for anything!

Great dogs, full of character....but we lived in the city with a small garden so had to walk him twice a day 365 days a year. That was 730 walks a year! Rain, snow or shine. Including Christmas Day!

And honestly he'd have been overjoyed with 3 walks a day, lol.

Will never again get such a high energy dog. My friend has a Lurcher and ironically needs only one good walk a day sprinting around the park catching balls.

ElspethFlashman · 16/09/2020 16:39

Oh and we were still finding hairs years after we had him! Grin

Total moult monster.

fruitpastille · 16/09/2020 16:44

My long haired JRT sheds only a little bit and just needs a good brush a couple of times a week. Also they are not all crazy/yappy (unless there is a squirrel close by). Mine will walk for miles but also happy to lounge around the house and is very soft and friendly. @Dontfuckingsaycheese scruffy ones are the best!

midnightstar66 · 16/09/2020 16:51

We have a nearly 7 month old JRT pup. She's short haired and moults a small amount. We give her a quick brush a couple of times a week and that's all she needs. She's never gets dirty and has never needed a bath so very low maintenance. She is so much fun. Tolerates the kids and their friends , adores me and my parents and absolutely loves to play with other dogs. I can't wait til she's a bit older and we can start closing Lon get hikes and some agility stuff. She hated the rain and is more than happy to have a lazy day when the weather isn't so good.

midnightstar66 · 16/09/2020 16:57

I'll add my jrt lives with us in a flat and goes to my retired parents Monday to Friday while I work. They are also in a flat and she's quite happy jist mooching about. They don't all need tons of exercise more so they need company. I'd never get one if I didn't have somewhere for her to go while I worked as they wouldn't do well alone for hours. I think that's more of an issue than the exercise levels. Mine is Black and Tan so maybe why she doesn't seem to moult. It's the white hairs that seem to show up badly

VinylDetective · 16/09/2020 17:02

It is but it’s totally worth it. Our girl came to live with us last year, just after my 66th birthday. The need for two walks a day was a major factor in our decision, we wanted a dog that would force us to exercise.

fruitpastille · 16/09/2020 17:02

That's true, mine loves company. She's no trouble but will follow me from room to room or lie on the top step waiting if I'm upstairs! Having said that I do leave her for a few hours sometimes and she's been fine.

allfurcoatnoknickers · 16/09/2020 17:10

I've got a JRT and a JRT/Beagle cross in a garden flat. Honestly, they're high energy, but they're not that bad. They had a 40 minute on-lead walk this morning and now they're both happily snoozing in their baskets.

The JRT/Beagle sheds like crazy. The JRT is wire haired though, so he doesn't shed at all. He needs hand stripping a couple of times a year, but you could learn to do that yourselves.

If you like terriers and brainy dogs, how about a Cairn? I used to have one and she was fab. Busy and bright and active, but not as much of a loon as JRTs. Also didn't shed.

midnightstar66 · 16/09/2020 17:10

Yes mine is the same, always at your feet moving around the house, she's a real faithful little companion. She's good when we have to pop out and leave her occasionally but I'd never recommend one to someone that worked outside the home and wanted to leave them say with a dog walker half way through. She's very versatile with walks as some days we have less than others and she's happy just to potter - on wet days you have to carry her out as she won't leave the house voluntarily 😆. I hadn't planned a jrt, we had intended to get a Boston terrier but I wouldn't be without her now.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 17/09/2020 15:05

Haha midnight mine is the same, he hates getting wet!!

Our jrt cross yorkie loves company and follows us around the house but can be left for up to 4 hours if needed (it very rarely is needed). He is happy with two 30-45 min walks a day and sleeps most of the day in between walks.

Sertchgi123 · 17/09/2020 15:08

Poodle all the way, easier to train, bark less, more loyal.

perfumeistooexpensive · 17/09/2020 15:15

I've had both. Poodle every time. JR barking a nightmare.

lurker101 · 17/09/2020 15:20

I would go for a poodle every time! My parents have a toy poodle and she’s the best dog. She doesn’t cast hairs, which makes keeping a tidy house much easier, loves to snuggle and loves a good walk. She is also so intelligent. We don’t have many children in the family, but when they do visit (around once a year) she loves to spend time with them.

VinylDetective · 17/09/2020 15:38

Our JR loathes the wet too. She’s really pissed off when it’s raining and she has to go out for a wee. We cut the barking off at the pass, she knows it’s not tolerated and is stopped the moment it starts. So much for the vet who reckoned they’re untrainable!

midnightstar66 · 17/09/2020 17:40

Yes barking is definitely a trainable trait. Mine isn't a barker either. It's even half hearted at the postman and she doesn't bark when the door is knocked. Surprised a vet said they are untrainable- a working jrt would need to be very well trained indeed. They are clever and very willing to please which is a great combo for trainability ( obviously you need to be consistent with such a dog)

Fifer2020 · 17/09/2020 17:49

thanks so much to everyone for there replies
