How was your bitch’s first season?

We’re not entirely sure but left puppy class when there was a bit of internet’s being shown. She’s seeing more, seems out of sorts, and licking her bits a lot. Vulva looks a bit swollen and nipples might be harder.

She’s 9 months, medium sized dog.

Very straightforward, if a bit messy. She swelled up, did her best to keep herself clean, had to be walked with due care and attention. Totally textbook season, about 20 days. Came out of it her normal self, matured a bit, no phantom pregnancy.

I watched out for pyo but thank God none of that either.

First was relatively straightforward, save for her neutered brother still managing to tie on.

But the second season came earlier than expected. Holy hell. She became Houdini, and you couldn't take your eyes off her without her getting outside, scaling an 8 foot gate and running wild.

One of mine was a bit out of sorts, more clingy and had a pee accident overnight, which she was mortified about. She kept herself clean and no phantom pregnancies, thank goodness, as labs are prone to these.

Does 9 months seem a bit early. We aren't quite sure really - and I think you can see things that convince you they are the signs. She's definitely not herself though.

Pyometra is a life threatening womb infection.

We dog sat a 3 yr old Doberman bitch for a while who developed it. It needs very urgent attention/surgery.

Pro = pyometra.
As Wings says, straight to the vet. If you have a bitch coming out of her season, check out the symptoms and keep your eyes open.

I have known a dog who died of it, and another who had to have an emergency spay.

Our Lab is almost 7 months and has been in season for 7 days now. She has bled a little and has a swollen vulva. We've had to be careful on walks, and she sniffs about for ages. She's definitely behaving a bit differently, but things are fine. Hope it doesn't last too long.

Never had one because she was spayed, I know that is unpopular on this page but pet dogs should not be able to breed.

My pet is a vulnerable native breed (often fewer than 100 puppies nationally a year) and we have not yet decided whether to have a litter, so will not be spaying for now

She has had one season, which started about six weeks ago and lasted a textbook 3 weeks, and was unproblematic,

I was thinking about getting dog ‘period pants’ for the next one, and we ended up washing her back end quite frequently in the first couple of weeks

I have a secure back garden (terraced house, so very unlikely to get anywhere) and walks have to be on lead and in less frequented areas. I think she missed her dog friends where we usually walk - as she was grumpy (wanted to run around as usual, barking because she couldn’t) but I suppose that might have been hormones. She was her usual self inside though

My (normally sociable) dog became very anxious and frankly quite aggressive at times! She seemed to go into heat a couple of months before her littermates, so maybe that’s why. I don’t think we ever really got her back, tbh.... She’s been jumpy and nervy ever since. I almost wish I’d had her desexed prior to this. (It was seven months, btw)

First season (medium-large breed) at 7.5 months..two months before any of her litter mates. It was a breeze.. 3 weeks, kept herself clean and was cheerful.
Second this August.. hideous.. total personality change.. anxious, moody, became aggressive to all dogs. She's just coming down from it now, and is gradually improving socially but I'm not sure she will return to her previous self entirely. She's being spayed in a few months time and I wish I'd just had it done after her first!

Our vet advised letting her have a season then waiting 3 months till spaying. We aren’t going to breed. She’s a week in now I think and a bit less grumpy. She is normally such a happy little dog. But signs of that coming back. She is v sleepy though. We’ve been on lead walking and being careful of her meeting other dogs on lead as she Is being so uncharacteristically grumpy.

I had my previous dogs spayed at 6 months, so prior to first season. Never went through any of the same kind of shit that I have with this one. I’m not waiting again!!!
