@Bunglemom glad you had a better night, life is so much easier to cope with when you've had a bit of rest! Sending you copious gin until the ILs are gone.

@puppygalore I basically cope with the biting by thinking of it as his way of hugging me....he climbs right up on my lap if I sit down with him and tucks his head into my neck and chews my hair (or my DHs beard!). I think he just wants to get really close lol.

Bunglemom · 01/10/2020 11:06

@Chocolateandamaretto
😁🍸
Thanks very much, Gin is very well received!

Jayne35 · 01/10/2020 11:17

@Chocolateandamaretto your puppy cuddles sound lovely, ours basically flies at me like a tiny missile biting whatever she can grab Grin she does softly chew my husbands beard though, in fact she is much less bitey with him too, I think maybe he is pack leader.

desperatehousewife21 · 01/10/2020 11:19

Just checking in. Pup gets bitey too but only in a play/ testing out kind of way never aggressive. We just give him a cardboard tube as a replacement to our hands! I did check some packs of chew treats in the shop today but they said not suitable for under 4 month olds so didn’t get any. Does anyone here give their pups these chew type treats I.e bonio/ dentastix?

Pup has been LOADS better at night, so much so that DH is going to spend one more night completely out of sight on the sofa, pup shut in crate in the next room and if he has another good night he’s going to attempt to come up to bed tomorrow night!

Chocolateandamaretto · 01/10/2020 11:41

@Jayne35 he is very affectionate and delighted to see us ALL THE TIME lol, he does get quite bouncy and jumpy as well but he basically does it because he just wants to cuddle us. He bites DH harder than me because I don't wind him up and I put up with less - I wear a lot of dresses for work and I won't tolerate him tearing them so I leave the room much quicker! Maybe your DH is the same.

@desperatehousewife21 amazing! so glad you've had some progress. Fingers crossed tonight goes well.

We do give chocpup a lily's kitchen woof brush which is softer than a dentastix but obviously he has lots of chews like pizzles/antler/anco wood which also do his teeth some good. I'd look at some long lasting chews tbh as they get more mileage out of them and as they take ages to eat it's not such an imposition on their daily food allowance.

desperatehousewife21 · 01/10/2020 12:01

Yeah long lasting chews is what I’d like to get him, so hard to know where to start, what’s good for him, what to avoid etc

Chocolateandamaretto · 01/10/2020 12:30

@desperatehousewife21 So my pup is 14 weeks old and we give him bully sticks/pizzles, yak milk chews and antlers. I quite like natural cornish pet and they sell a soft/easy antler for puppies:
naturalcornishpet.co.uk/products/green-and-wilds-easy-antler-dog-chew?variant=9233738891316

It's quite a good website and a lot of their products have size/age guidelines.

desperatehousewife21 · 01/10/2020 14:07

Thanks chocolateandamaretto I’ll have a look at that site Smile

TriSkiRun99 · 01/10/2020 18:22

I found our local indoor market that has a pet stall sells random chews it’s like pick n mix for doggies. So individual chews are 40p upto £2 each, I’ve tried the Chicken sticks & pizzle sticks lasted 20-25mins, the dried pigs ear thing was most expensive and was gone in less than 10mins! But she was a happy pup chewing loads as her big teeth fell out we saw blood on her toy but never spotted the tooth but there was a gap with massive big white tooth pushing in. Explains why she’s started chewing loads again this last week. She’s 22wks old now.
Does anyone else pup only poo at home? I think she’s only been once out on a walk, she always saves it for the garden and our bins are only collected every 3-weeks so we have to have a separate bin outside to hold the poo bags as it stinks.

Chocolateandamaretto · 01/10/2020 18:45

@TriSkiRun99 yes!!! Chocpup is very poo shy lol. He will wee on any grass but likes to poo in specific spots in our garden and nowhere else!

verygrumpyoldwoman · 01/10/2020 19:13

What a difference a day makes!
Yesterday, VeryGrumpyPup had me in tears... wee or poo indoors pretty much every time I went on a call for work, then awful bitey / lunging at me zoomies in the evening. Really felt I just couldn't cope.
Today, we tried going out for a walk... not great - either me dragging him along trying to stop him eating stones / rubbish - or him dragging me, but we made it slowly down the hill to the postbox and back (a couple of minutes normally - but took about 15 mins allowing for sniffing time) - and somehow managed to get outdoors on the lead for most toilet trips, and he was lovely napping on his bed while I worked (hopefully tired out by short walk and a lot of outdoor sniffing). Suddenly it feels like there might be light at the end of the tunnel. Sure there will be bad days - but a good day makes all the difference!

Riverhousepuppy · 01/10/2020 19:58

Riverpup is 14 weeks tomorrow and still likes a good biting session but is showing moments of stopping and I think is getting better than weeks ago.
She is also poo shy when out and waits til she get in. Dh got up with her this morning and instead of putting her directly outside he let her into lounge/diner where she shat on the carpet. I didnt see it when I got up and trod a big lump into the carpet. Was absolutely disgusting. All over my slipper, all on the floor. Could have killed dh for being such a rookie.
We are getting new carpet in couple of weeks so hoping he has learnt his lesson.
I still need to learn when Riverpup is saying she wants to go outside too, but not great at that. When the door is open she is fine but I need to learn her signals when the door is shut. I am acc thinking about working from lounge/diner with door shut so I can keep a close eye on her and see if I can work out the door situation easier,plus carpet going soon anyway if there was an accident. Madness or good plan?
@Bunglemom so glad last night was a bit better

Riverhousepuppy · 01/10/2020 20:00

Btw i meant she is poo shy when out and waits til she gets in, as in means gets home in to our garden as opposed to in the house, although from the rest of my post above you may question that ;-)

LittlePoot · 01/10/2020 20:36

Hello you wonderful people. Sorry I'm just lurking and not posting a lot. I'm still a bit all over the place but your posts are really helping me so thank you. Glad to read about some improvements and I'll also be keeping everything crossed that Bunglemom's in laws are out by the end of the month....

Toilet training similarly sketchy here - 14 weeks too. Some days all outside, and even asking to go out to pee and poo. Other days (like yesterday) he just pees on the floor with no warning and not a care in the world. Hates going outside in the rain too so I'm dreading the next couple of days...

Definitely not poo shy - often takes a poo on someone else's driveway or the middle of the pavement on a walk....

Riverhousepuppy · 01/10/2020 20:45

Nice to see you @LittlePoot :-)
Riverpup does those random no warning wees too. Why? At least give a quick sniff circle so we can jump up

puppygalore · 01/10/2020 21:14

Oh no @Riverhousepuppy! Poor you.

It's so true about a day making a difference. Pup has been so lovely today, much less stressful. I gave her an extra walk this evening and she's been so much better behaved tonight than usual. Less bitey, much more affectionate, not as persistently jumping at the kids, had a nice little nap at their bedtime which she put herself down for - it's been so nice compared to previous evenings. DH even managed to eat his tea in front of her without her trying to leap into his plate every 5 seconds! So while I know too much exercise can be bad in terms of growth and development, it's really made such a positive change in her mood. She had 5-10 mins this morning, then about 15-20 after lunch, then 5ish mins at 6pm, so I'm hoping that's still more or less within the recommended amount. I think I'll have to adjust our walks and maybe regularly do 3 really short ones or see if we can skip the lunchtime one and see if the calmer behaviour continues or if it's just a random one off tonight.

Riverhousepuppy · 01/10/2020 22:35

@puppygalore that sounds like a great evening puppy wise. How many weeks is she?
Maybe 3 little walks is the way forward, I might try that. Riverpup was at doggy daycare this morning which she loved but was knackered when she got home. She is terrible at settling herself and just paces for ages. No walks for her when she has been there but we will go tomorrow. They are becoming the highlight of my day, bar the incessant pulling for the majority

puppygalore · 02/10/2020 06:40

@Riverhousepuppy she's 13 weeks so a little bit behind yours I think?

Walks are basically what we live for too, pulling is crazy though, she's already so strong I feel like she could easily pull me right over. She did 1 really good walk after our training session on tues and since then back to choking herself trying to pull away. Either I've forgotten the correct method/tone, or she's decided she doesn't care anyway!

Annasgirl · 02/10/2020 10:43

Oh I love you ladies - I get so despondent some days as toilet training is still hit and miss, although getting better. But it's just that loads of people keep telling me it only took 2 weeks to toilet train their puppy and I now feel there is something wrong with Daisy.

Also, so, this is funny, I was on a call to a family member this morning, who was bereaved this week, so a sensitive call. Daisy had already weed just earlier, and had done a poo in garden for Dh at 7. So I relaxed into the call. Daisy barked but I ignored and then she came and sat under the table - I was suspicious of a poo attempt so I tried to get her to follow me outside, while not saying anything to her as I was listening to family member's very sad story - anyway, Daisy ignored me, pooed under table and then tried to eat her pooShock. SO I had to take her out from under the table and I only had kitchen roll beside me to grab the poo before she ran back in. Then I caught sight of her with a small piece of poo (this is a horrid tale isn't it Grin) and I had to grab it off her with my hand Shock. Lucky that I am so Covid obsessed and there is a huge bottle of soap on my kitchen window, so I spent 10 minutes scrubbing my hands.

Also, due to Daisy having nasal issues (Shih Tzu) and the Vet assuming she had an infection, she still has not had her vaccinations so we are STILL housebound - between that and our semi-lockdown here (Dublin), I am feeling the strain. However, she is settling into the family wonderfully and is a really adorable dog with a beautiful temperament (except for her mad zombie times, which we have all learned to control with lots of chew toys).

I really want to thank you all for keeping me sane - and I hope we spend many more weeks and months chatting about our lovely puppies together.

Chocolateandamaretto · 02/10/2020 10:56

@Annasgirl oh no! Urgh the poo eating is something else isn't it!? And they definitely know when you're trying to do something important! Before chocpup decided he didn't like next door's cat and started to bark at her, he used to be obsessed with finding her shit in the garden and eating it Envy (not envy!!) And if he finds a fox poo on a walk he basically has to be rugby tackled. Revolting!!

I agree though it's been fab having people with similar aged puppies to talk to - I feel a lot more sane knowing it's not just me!!! As this is the September thread would you guys like me to make an "October" one or shall we use this one until it's full?

LBee2020 · 02/10/2020 11:03

Let's use this one until it's full and people don't get confused but definitely up for having an October one after that. The perspective from this group is invaluable!

Bunglemom · 02/10/2020 11:07

@Annasgirl

Thanks for helping me too... it makes it feel a little bit less daunting knowing people are in the same boat!
Its nice to know there is a safe place to vent/ask advice/share stories etc without being judged by my inlaws especially!

Hope lockdown isnt too bad for you, fingers crossed you can get out and about soon!

@Chocolateandamaretto

Maybe an October one would be good (even though i had totally forgotten we'd changed months 🤣)

Mummyme87 · 02/10/2020 11:57

I collect my 9week old miniature dachshund tomorrow. Super excited but the weather is far from ideal for toileting 😬😬

Ooh , congrats. Please post a pic as soon as puppy arrives. My DD wants to get one when she moves out (she is 16 so this will not happen for a long time, and also, she needs a house/flat/ person to mind dog (!!)

Yes, it is really, really, difficult to keep up with the toilet training in this dire weather, especially when you have a bit of a princess like ours who looks at us like we are mad when we open the back door and go out in the teeming rain!!!

grannycake · 02/10/2020 12:40

I use a large golfing umbrella at the moment especially for any nighttime or early morning toilet trips. I hold over grannypup so she goes as quickly as possible and we can get back inside. She hates the rain but we are in Wales so she'll just have to get used to it
