Trying to adopt a dog but.....

...it's not as easy as that, is it? We have had dogs for years, different breeds/ages/sexes. We currently have a six year old spaniel who we adopted from the English springer spaniel welfare, when I was pregnant. Our lurcher is getting a bit doddery and unwell , so we'd like to introduce another dog during the next six months or so, as a companion to the spaniel when she goes, bless her. . Not fussy about breed, would prefer a mix/mongrel really. Smaller than a lurcher would be ideal, though not critical. I thought we were quite flexible in our requirements, but apparently not. None of the dogs I've seen can live with other dogs or primary ages children.
I'd always been a bit sceptical of adopting from abroad, but I can now see why it's becoming popular, as it's increasingly difficult to adopt the thousands of dogs who need homes in the UK! Has anyone any recent experience of this and how did you approach it? I know it shouldn't be easy to adopt them, but if you have a child or another dog, it would appear that it's impossible.

@bunnygeek

I understand this. I have fostered several dogs and helped in their successful rehoming.

I wasn’t applying for particular dogs - I was turned down before I even reached that stage. I have always approached a rescue on the basis of “these are my circumstances” do you have a dog I can rehome that would suit. As I said, some rescues wouldn’t even talk further.

Luckily I found a lovely rescue who I continue to support and used to foster for - I now have a child with SEN which means I can’t foster.

We have recently adopted a rescue dog from a charity who rescues dogs from abroad for the same reasons that you listed OP

It’s a fantastic charity and they’re sensible about vetting. We have a 5 year old child and an older dog and they could see straight away that we could offer this dog a home and our 5 year old is sensible with dogs.

Our new dog is wonderful. We love her so much already and shes settled in very well with us.

We’re getting so much more out of the experience of adopting a rescue rather than a puppy this time and personally I dont have an issue with rescuing a dog from a country where dogs are destroyed and have little chance of being rehomed.
