How to settle needy pup at night

I'm looking for any tips to settle our yr old Sprocker who we have rehomed. In his previous home he shared a bed with another dog so he's definitely missing his companion. He's only been with us since Saturday but has settled brilliantly apart from at night he just wants to be with someone constantly. Any tips gratefully received Smile

We used a pet heat block and a clock to emulate heat and heartbeat. It worked a treat

But I will say, it did take 2 weeks for him to sleep properly

Thanks I'll look into that. He seems fine as long as he knows you are there but I don't want him sleeping on my bed as I know that will disturb my DH and he really does need his sleep as he's a HGV driver.

We have a very needy dog too. We got told by trainer to put her in crate as she needs to learn that she can't be with us all he time and when she's out of cage she feels like she's protecting us and therefore wont sleep well whereas if she is in crate, she will have her own space. It's 50/50 whether she cries or not. Sometimes she cries all night and we let her out but recently we have put her in with her brother and she sleeps all night. Intiallt, we made the crate so positive. Gave them a treat for going in during day to get use to it, out their favourite blanket and toys in there. Don't put them in until you're going to bed. Trial a crate with a blanket over ( v important so they don't see you) and when they cry, take them outside as they will associate crying with you taking then to the toilet. Don't put This is long I'll admit but it worked for us in past - hope this helps.

Thanks my dad lent us his crate last night but it's massive so off out to get a smaller one when the shops open. He knew what the crate was and was happy to go in it but because it's huge I couldn't put it in my room. I'm thinking a smaller crate ( appropriate for him ) in my room next to me might work.
Our last dog we had from 8wks and either I've forgotten those first few days / weeks or I've blocked them out Wink

We are the worst dog owners ... I would bring it to bed with us.....

Spidey66 · 25/08/2020 08:21

OMG how cute is he?

glitterelf · 25/08/2020 08:23

@whattodo2019 I'm still considering kicking DH out and just sleeping with Al Grin

@Spidey66 I know and just so loving. We are very lucky to have him especially in the current climate we're puppies are concerned. Thankfully I'm good friends with his previous owner and by chance it cropped up in a convo that she was looking to rehome him as he needs lots of attention and even though she only works part time it wasn't enough.
