Red Setter or other?

I’m planning to take early retirement (50) in the next 2 years, so will finally be ready for another dog. I’ve previously had a poodle and a cocker spaniel (long deceased).

Always loved the Red Setter and I want a dog that likes a walk so that I keep fit. We have 2 Burmese cats which were bred in a house with a dog, they’re pretty robust and confident and I’m sure can put a pup in their place. But it’s something to consider.

I always had the dogs sleep on the bed and the cats also sleep on the bed. I’m not sure if that’s the best way nowadays, I hear a lot of dogs sleep in crates?

Any experience of this breed or any others people might recommend? What is the moulting like? Any health issues to watch out for? Thanks

Had one as a child. Yes to the drool. Stealing food, running off, loony.

She was great with cats. She needed a lot of tlc when old- picking up to put in car as legs had arthritis.

I have a whippet and he’s perfect- of course!
You could get a big hairy lurcher (Whippet or greyhound crosses with terrier) - some are great with cats. Once they’ve run around they are happy to slump wherever. Whippets don’t really bark (they do sing though ;-)), no slobber, no smell, no common congenital defects, not prone to arthritis as they don’t carry much weight on those elegant bones. They are just the right size as they can be picked up.

The only thing with whippets is when you walk in the kitchen an they are counter 🏄‍♀️ surfing!

Whippets don’t tend to be the £1+k That some trendy breeds are, and not as likely to be from puppy farms. Watch out for that

We have an 11 year old male Irish setter who was intact until last year when he was neutered due to prostate issues, which were then solved. His coat hasn't really been affected. He is an absolutely gorgeous dog and gets on well with our cats (we had 4 when he joined our family as a pup). We've had no problems with recall and he is so good natured. We took him long walks at the weekend but he was fine with an hourly walk in the week. We live in the countryside though so was off lead for the majority of the time and probably did triple our mileage from free running (which the breeder said was vital). He wasn't destructive as a puppy but was never really left alone fire king periods of time and as an older dog sleeps a lot. He is extremely affectionate, tries to sit on your knee and wants to be close all the time. Can you tell I adore him?!

Fire king should be for long!
I'm talking in the past tense about walking as he's older and suffering from a bit of arthritis so can't walk as far.

His pedigree name is Deevonville San Marino!
@KnobChops They are a wonderful breed.

wetotter · 14/08/2020 22:02

If you're keen on setters, do also consider the English setter and the Irish red and white setter, both of which are vulnerable native breeds

@villainousbroodmare

Here he is.
❤️❤️❤️

We got our rescue after turning up at the rspca looking for a small dog. This was back in the early 80s. I walked for miles every day with her, once she learnt to walk to heel and not drag me along the pavement. I was only 11!she did have a terrible flea rash and her tail was bald and bloody, when we got her. And she drooled profusely, whenever food smelled good and any time we took her in the car - early 80s, so standing in the boot, naturally, drooling on our heads!

WinWinnieTheWay · 14/08/2020 22:48

We had a Gordon Setter when I was a child. He was so lovely, utterly stupid by with bags of personality and so loyal and affectionate. He did roll in Fox poo a lot, but not sure if that's breed standard?

Sarahlou63 · 14/08/2020 22:51

I have a red setter, imaginatively called Red. Look forward to strings of snot across the nose, constant burrs and seed pods in the pads, regular ear cleaning and obsessive behaviour. Ours is convinced he is a master hunter despite the fact a mouse ran across his nose to make an escape last week.

I adore him. Grin

Parents also adopted a red and white irish setter, back in the lste 90s. He was rejected after a divorce for being the more difficult of a pair and needed a canine companion. Like the first rescue, he has zero recall but he developed a close relationship with the prim and proper red setter bitch they had.

She mostly kept him in line but, every now and then, she'd turn and start frolicking with him like a puppy. They were pretty good for each other.

Shouldbedoing · 14/08/2020 22:59

My parents have an English Setter. She's bright and well trained, energetic but gentle. The red setters I've met are lolloping and dim by comparison.

RandomMess · 14/08/2020 23:09

I fell in love with Red Setters as a young child, family fitness has one and then they kept one of her puppies.

Not sure I'll ever have the stamina to own one bit all photos and stories of all the setters are making me swoon 😍

Red Setter or other?
longcoffee · 14/08/2020 23:49

My nan had a wonderful red setter, she lived on the edge of woodland, with foxes and badgers pootling around her garden.

The foxes took to this massive daft gingernut, and he'd go and sit at her gate while they played in the lane - we were sure he thought he was a fox. When the foxes had cubs they bought them right up to the gate to show him 😍

He'd run for miles, but great recall. He was daft as a brush and a bugger for sneaking stuff out your bag (glasses cases usually) and, as subtly as a giant red furry thing can, sulking off to his bed to hide.

MrsPnut · 15/08/2020 08:04

My grandparents had a red setter cross that my granddad found tied to a bench as a puppy when he was on his beat. Instead of taking it to Battersea, he took it home. Oscar was the dopiest dog ever but so loving.

We have pugs, they can do long walks as well as lounging around. Small enough to carry and so comical but very stubborn.

dianebrewster · 15/08/2020 08:47

Lovely breed but I wouldn't have one - even more bonkers than Flatcoated retrievers - and I've had 7 of those!

And of course it can sleep on the bed! This is the scene on mine now (one on the floor) We have a post breakfast back to bed policy - me with my cup of tea and iPad, while they let their breakfast settle and get ready for the day! Golden retriever, terrier X and a mini schnauzer (on the floor)

Of course the big dogs like to stretch out on the bed and you have to deal with the whole "foot in the face" scenario 🤨😉

KnobChops · 15/08/2020 09:10

Thank you for the photos of all your overly doggies. I think in reality I need to focus on medium sized breeds. Which is a little sad but I love all doggies, so....

How about a spaniel - maybe one of the rarer breeds, such as a Clumber?

Yes I do love spaniels. Just didn’t want to get another cocker as would be comparing all the time to my old girl.
