Eeeek were on the waiting list for a chow chow pup! Does anyone here have one? If so please spam me with pics, tips and tricks!

you've 'seen' and you've 'heard.' But you haven't owned? Didn't think so grin
So?
I didn’t state anything as absolute fact, I clearly said ‘I have heard’ and I never would state anything re a breed as absolute fact as having a breed with poor public perception myself it drives me mad when people state untruths about them despite never having owned them themselves.

So whenever I give an opinion on a breed I haven’t actually owned myself (which I am more than entitled to do) I always say ‘I have heard’ or ‘I have read’

I'm not defensive - I couldn't care less who owns what dog. I'm simply answering the OPs question with MY experience whereas you are sharing your opinions based on nothing more than what you've 'seen' and 'heard' as you say yourself
You absolutely are!

You are angry that I have said that imo from what I have seen they don’t look like healthy dogs.
I absolutely stand by that, the amount of wrinkling, particularly around the eyes is ridiculous.
The original Chow was a gorgeous, functional dog.
I am so, so glad that exaggeration hasn’t (yet) creeped too much into ‘my’ breed.

And you seem angry that I have heard the breed can suffer with health problems with hip dysplasia and skin issues and entroption.

If I have heard wrong and they don’t get hip dysplasia or entroption or skin problems then by all means correct me but it’s a bit ridiculous to be getting cross for me relaying information about the breed I have heard but making it clear it is what I have heard and I have no actual experience of the breed.

What irritates me is people clearly hard of comprehension - the OP asks if anyone has owned one and if so, for pics and hints etc
So rude!
I think you’ll find that almost every breed specific thread has posts from people who don’t actually have the breed themselves.
Who put forward an opinion based what they have read or heard or from brief encounters with other people’s dogs like the PP who is a dog walker and the PP with the paper round...
Perhaps you should berate those posters next seeing as they also haven’t owned one!?

She didn't ask for the google views from people who haven't owned one
Again, I didn’t use google.
But I did use google to pull up some images of what the chow used to look like.
Quite heartbreaking.

I've not owned a chow but my dog has three chow besties (two different owners) and they're great with dogs and people. My last dog had a chow friend too now I come to think of it and he was a dog who chose his friends carefully.

Some other breeds of dog find chows a bit 'threatening' I think because they do have that very upright stance with high tail and pricked ears and a tendency to be still and watchful, which can be misinterpreted. The big male of the trio we know has a habit of lying down when meeting a new dog and that seems to diffuse any tension.

We also had a pup through training last year and he did well, although he sometimes gave the impression he had far better things to think about than heelwork and down-stays and would be with you when he'd finished cogitating. He wasn't stubborn by any means, just didn't see the point of some things. He was quite happy 'smiling' on request to show off his blue tongue in return for a treat and playing afterwards with a whippet from his class.

So you have to have owned a particular breed in order to have an opinion? Righty-o then Hmm

@vanillandhoney no of course not. But where did the OP say ' can I have your opinions on Chows please?'

For the hard of reading (you), she asked if anyone had one and if so - as in IF YOU HAVE ONE - could they spam her with pics and tricks.

Seemed pretty straightforward to me

Thanks @kipperfaced I was looking for points of view from owners ideally so very helpful :) of course I was expecting the negatives, nothing I'm not aware of but thanks for the comments.

So sorry to derail your thread! I'm not even massively passionate about chows Grin - merely wanted to share my experience of owning one and that it's all good with a daily brush and the socialisation

I notice it time and again in the doghouse though - the same old posters falling over themselves to tell you how shit your chosen breed is and have you considered a grey hound. So yeah, I will make points about that!

And yet you're the one who decided to get rude and pick people apart for daring to have an opinion!

OP was perfectly pleasant to everyone, accepted that the breed was going to cause some controversy and answered everyone perfectly politely and in good humour - so why did you feel the need to barge in and criticise people? Hmm

I know what she asked. That doesn't mean that nobody else is allowed to comment! Again - you're the one who seems to have taken offence on OP's behalf and I'm really not sure what your agenda is.

Gorgeous dogs though yes do socialise them early as they can be pretty dog adverse. I haven’t had a chow chow but did have a shar-pei and they tend to share the same personality - a bit “stand offish”. Good luck - they are beautiful

Gosh, well I’ve had a couple of Labradors, a cross breed, erm a Doberman, a Lurcher, a Greyhound, a Standard Poodle so I’ll just stick to questions about these breeds as I must be an expert on them.
Like my friend who got a breed cos it looked cute but had no idea they were prone to a serious illness which hers nearly died of as she’d done zero research.
Always best to get views from all sides.
I’m very into dogs and have worked with them and know loads but that Chow fucking terrified me!

Interesting, I don’t have a greyhound and doubt I ever will.

And like I said, if anyone asked me about ‘my’ breed, I would be damn sure to tell them about the bad points, health-wise and temperament-wise aswell as the good as it’s important to be fully prepared.
