Toothache in elderly dog

My mini schnauzer aged 12-14 (rescue so not sure) needs all his top teeth out which my vet is hoping to do ASAP but is trying to get a skin allergy under control with steroids. I spoke at length to him yesterday and need to ring Monday to hopefully book in. Apart from occasionally pawing his mouth this last week he's been ok but is very restless and pawing at and rolling on his mouth tonight. Would it be ok to give him quarter of a paracetamol as some pain relief tonight? I know my brother has done in the past with dogs of his but I never have and am worried I'll do more harm than good. If it's of any consequence his kidney function results have just come back as absolutely fine. I just want to ease his pain til we can get his teeth sorted. Any advice would be very welcome.

Aww poor dog. I've never gave my dog a paracetamol but have heard others do before. I can't think of anything worse than a dog with toothache, poor thing!! Hope it settles down and is relieved of it soon xx

In desperation I gave him an eighth of one and rubbed his back til he's finally asleep. Will be on the phone to vet first thing Monday. Thanks for replies, he's been neglected in the past and I just want to give him a happy retirement.

My dog has paracetamol as advised by the vet bought from supermarket, but you need them to tell you the appropriate dose for your dogs weight & whether it will interfere with treatments/conditions. Best bet is to ring vet as all have contact number for out of hours care & see if they will advise.
I'd think a quarter tablet would be too much for a mini Schnauzer though, going by my dogs dose.

I gave him an eighth, it's not something I would do often but at least he's finally getting some sleep unlike me who feels the need to watch over him!

Call the vets tomorrow and see if they will dispense some Metacam ( name may have changed now) for him in the meantime.

With one of our previous dogs it was adviced by the vet that we gave him infant Calpol, and told the dose to use (based on size). Some dogs have a problem with Metacam. Our current one did (although previous ones hadn't); within about an hour of his first dose he vomited three times. The advantage of Calpol over tablets is you can just squirt it on their food.

Sorry - should be 'advised'. I do feel sorry for dogs when they get toothache; It's excruiating and they can't tell us they're in pain. Hope your boy gets relief soon. It's great you've got a rescue (all ours have been), and great you're prepared to spend the money on making his life better, even though he's elderly. We adopted our latest at the age of eight. All our rescues have been sighthounds who, for some reason, are particularly prone to teeth problems. When we got our current boy he only had five teeth left, but this summer he's got us back and forwards to the vets for corns, of all things. Who'd think that a dog would get a corn and cost you several hundred pounds. It's to do with them getting ingrowing corns on the pads, making it painful to walk.
