How noisy are your dogs..?

Space constraints mean next dog has to be small really.
Think we are decided on a chihuahua, but, I hate barking...

This is the plan which was followed for current (exceptionally quiet) dog and I’m hoping will work for pup?

  • The puppy will be taught to go to it’s bed when the doorbell rings/door is knocked and stay there until released.
Lots and lots of treats for silence.
  • Any barking and/or fence running outside mean an immediate end to being in the garden
  • Complete ignoring of attention seeking barking.
  • immediate doggy time out for barking eg at postman or people walking past window

Is it likely to work and result in a nice, quiet, non barking chihuahua?
Current dog virtually never barks in the house and that is exactly how I like it.

Not sure if this is helpful, but I have a deaf dog. She does bark, but rarely in the house as she cant hear passers by. (Not why we got her, but it is quite useful as we also don't need a noisy dog!) She is trained to hand signals and has excellent recall. Obviously they do come with their own issues, but to be honest she is less of a problem than her fully hearing predecessor. There is quite an extensive deaf dog network if you're interested, they do seem to come in all sort of shapes, sizes and ages, although white does seem quite a common theme.

I would have said that the miniature schnauzer, recommended upthread, is one of the barkiest breeds I know. In our veterinary practice when they are admitted for surgery, we schedule them early and send them home as soon as we reasonably can, to avoid our neighbours having to listen to them shouting incessantly.

Hi. I have a lovely chihuahua. She is very well behaved and loves people. She is a very good watchdog but is also very well trained so will stop barking on command. That is the key to all dogs regardless of breed. I enrolled her in puppy school and we have been consistent with training and routine with her. I have never had or known a chihuahua before her and she is such a lovely affectionate dog. Before lockdown I would tuck her under my arm and walk around the highstreet shops with her. Nobody batted an eye at it and most people don't notice she's there. We mad sure to socialise her as much as possible early on so she os used to people and will cuddle up to visitors in the house. She came from a lovely local family who had lots of other dogs and kids in the house.

Please ignore people who are rude about chihuahuas. I am sure there are some untrained ones out there or ones from dodgy breeders. Chihuahuas can be lovely, loving companions.
