Strange things that freak your dog out

Our dog is a super confident little chap not scared of the usual things dogs are scared of like fireworks. Instead he gets freaked out by the most random things:

  1. A large bindweed flower.
  2. A PS4 controller that was on charge. It has a light on it that glows when it is charging.
  3. A sieve.
  4. A J2O bottle after my eldest blew air on it to make a noise.

Anyone else have a dog as crazy as ours?!

@drinkingwineoutofamug, your poor dog Sad. At least she now has a loving home. Totally understandable that she is scared of a long list of things. The same for other dogs that haven’t been cared for and socialised at a young age.

@Spidey66, our dog follows me when I take washing downstairs to see if he can steal anything. Your dog would be dismayed with his lack of launderette training. 😄

My late DLurcher, Morse, wasn't scared of things in the normal way, but would freak out and start limping if he ever got a wee twig or a sticky bud stuck on his fur. It wasn't even on his legs, so I've no idea why he limped! It took us a while to figure out what was going on, and then we'd say "yup, leaf stuck, left shoulder blade" or whatever - it was so cute!!

Bless him. Then there was one day when I genuinely thought I was going to have to carry him back from the park because it seemed like all of his legs were broken simultaneously, as he was alternating which leg he couldn't put any weight on and hopping dramatically. No leaves stuck to him that time, it was MUCH worse - he had mud up his nails 😂

Blimey my cocker spaniel is hard core compared to your lot.

The only thing she doesn't like in the house is the hairdryer and will disappear downstairs the minute I go into the bathroom, just in case.

She doesn't understand why any person or animal would go into the sea or a pond, and will stand in the shore barking and growling until they get out of the water. If you try carrying her in she started doggy paddling the minute you pick her up which is too hilarious not to do 😁

My dog has a phobia to the car... she gets very nervous, anxious starts vomiting... even before I turn it on.

She is a rescue dog, have tried everything from behaviourist approach, alternative remedies, special “calming” harnesses and massively expensive travel sickness tablets to no avail.

She is also particularly scared of walking at a particular pedestrianised area in the city centre, even if I am walking her when there is nobody there (early morning/late night) she starts jumping up asking me to carry her 😕

Dpup is also super confident and really good with noise, large noisy vehicles, skateboards, people in masks, wasn't bothered by her first storm etc however she has a HUGE issue with her reflection in the wall fire. She cares not a jot about joggers puffing by in close proximity, cyclists, walkers with poles yet someone standing stationary looking on to a river yesterday sent her in to a barking, growling frenzy. It was a wide path so we didn't even need to pass too close

Both my dog and cat do huge jumps across the french doors when coming in from the garden, as if there’s a huge scary object lying across the threshold.

Never do it at any other door.

When my dog was younger she was terrified of plastic bags in the wind - she seems to have grown out of it now though.

During the time she was going through her 'terrifying plastic bag' stage we were out on a walk on the land where the race course is in Brighton.

Anyone who knows the Brighton race course will know that you can walk right beside the actual course with just the low fence between you and the horses, which is where we were.

It was one of our regular walks but on that day I didn't realise it was a race day.

So we're walking along right beside the course when suddenly there's a loud pounding of hoofs and a crowd of horses appeared round the corner and rushed past us.

Hard to know what goes through a dog's head but clearly race horses en mass are far less scary than plastic bags in the wind, as she looked up briefly, took in the sight and went straight back to sniffing whatever had been interesting her before; no reaction at all, didn't turn a hair.

I, on the other hand was thrilled to be so close to all those beautiful creatures and just stood and stared.

This loo roll holder completely freaks my dog out! My cat knocked it over once and now my dog will tremble if he sees it 🙄🤣

Not scared of storms, fireworks or anything else really!!

Things that make my dog crazy.
Clean washing. As soon as you empty the washing machine, frenetic movements. She races me up to the stairs and stands by the tumble dryer until she knows the evil washing is safely away.

She is obsessed with clean floors. She has to be in the room when the floor is being washed, or else she wines. Then she likes to sit on the wet floor.

When we go to bed she is always fast asleep. The minute we turn off the tele, even before we have moved, she is racing around like a loon. I think she is herding us to bed. Strangely if we just turn it off in the earlier evening, she does nothing. I don’t know how she senses the final switch off.

At bed time she sits in the upper landing and waits for us to go to bed. We have separate rooms and, once we both turn out our lights, she decides which one she wants to sleep with.

If either of us get up in the night to go to the loo, she has to get in the bathroom with you. During the day we are allowed to pee in private.

So Maggie's not the only one who's a frustrated washer-woman!

That makes me laugh CarrieMoonBeams. Our first rescue dog wasn't a lurcher, as he was a cross between two sighthounds (whippet/greyhound), but he hated getting stuff on his paws, especially poo, even if it was his own. He'd hold up his paw and refuse to move until the dreaded substance was removed.

Report
somm · 29/06/2020 20:26

He also had an immaculate grooming routine which took place at the same time each evening, and included licking his paw and then using it to wipe down the back of his ears. [Oh, just realised, no wonder he didn't want poo on his paws - handsome, but always instagram ready, if we'd only had the internet in those days]

Sheets on the line
A foam roller
The tent rolled up in its bag (but that was OK once she'd got close enough to sniff its bum) Hmm

Aww somm, maybe your boy and my Morse were second cousins (or something). We used to call him "the amazing self-cleaning dog" because after a good muddy walk, with mud right up to the top of his legs, he'd be spotlessly clean at the end of the 10-minute drive home! ❤️ He was a cross between a Bearded Collie and a Greyhound, with long white "socks" at the front and short "socks" at the back. He looked like a cartoon dog drawn with just a pencil.

Thos sticky weeds..the one with the tiny fuzzy balls.
OMG the drama.. this afternoon she went crashing through some bushes chasing some imaginary deer (there was nothing actually there), got stuck, scrambled out with a whole sticky weed plant stuck to her double coat and harness.
The screams....Grin
I got the plant off but will spend most of this evening picking the little balls out of her hair where she hasn't spotted them!

Sheets in the washing line especially fitted ones
Balloons - especially the foil ones that last for ages and bob about
Umbrellas - open or closed
Wrapping paper
Cagoules
If you have something innocuous in your mouth such as a hairbrush while putting a bobble in your kids hair
Matches being lit
Frogs
Paddling pools
The dishwasher
When I press the steam jet button doing the ironing
Tinsel - none on our trees at Xmas it would tip her over the edge

She rather likes fireworks though Confused
