New puppy coming home in July- Crate training?

Miniature schnauzer coming home in a July 😍 we are all so excited! We’ve been waiting such a long time.
What are your thoughts on crate training? I grew up with dogs and we never did, and I never thought I would do it, but from what I’ve read it works really well?
We have a bouncy 6 year old DS and a cat so might be nice for him to have somewhere quiet to go if he feels overwhelmed!

He's so cute! We have just got a puppy and a week in crate training is going very well. He cried for the first 2 nights, less on night 2 then has been great since, we fasten it at night and get up to let him out every 2 hours, trying 2 1/2 tonight! In the day he takes himself in it for naps, I leave the door open. Presumably he regards it as "his" space as he also collects his toys and put them in there! We also have a puppy playpen for when we can't be watching his every move in the garden

Mine liked his crate so long as we were in the same room as him - if we left he cried. He sometimes went in for a break when overtired and stroppy and so, so bitey, and would hurl his bed around and then crash asleep. I never left him alone to do that so he knew he wasn’t being abandoned. There’s a certain level of privilege with people who say they put their pups in a separate room - not everyone has a spare room or utility room! Anyway, crate/pen/shut in room - the dog doesn’t know the difference. And it was a huge help with housetraining - we got up when he cried in the night and took him outside and he started sleeping through really quickly after we realised he was only upset if not in the room with us. And he wouldn’t have been safe in our room without a crate - we puppy-proofed the kitchen thinking he’d sleep there but he ended up in our bedroom and there’s not enough storage in our flat so too many things he could chew in there! It just depends on your circumstances. It’s only cruel if you dump them in there and ignore them for hours.

I have crate trained all but the current dog.
Crates are invaluable for settling them in (puppies&rescues) if they are happy using an open crate as a den.
Also invaluable if recovering from vet treatment/operations when back home.
My current rescue dog hated the crate and has ended up sleeping on my bed.
It's a pain if I want to stay in a hotel/at friends/families houses - as lots of people (quite understandably) don't want dogs upstairs/on their beds.
It was the best decision for this particular dog as she has to be with people, even at night, although she's fine if I leave her at home for a few hours - it's just if you are in, she wants to be with you.
But I would definitely try with a puppy, it's not cruel if used in a compassionate way (like everything).

mixed opinion - we have a crate, the door is open and theres blankets over it so just a normal den. he only goes in there at night for bed and sleeps great -when hes not in the crate he is restless, walks around all night and cant seem to settle.
I've found it really useful for when we have gone to stay at someone else's house and he just feels like his normal bedroom is his crate so settles wherever we take him.
I never used it to actually lock him in when we went out though as I think that's cruel and literally just trapping them, it's a bedtime only thing.

Can I just add, I've never locked mine in either, only to keep them safe when they were puppies & at night to help with toilet training/prevent them chewing anything.
