I wanted to post because I'm not sure if I'm being unreasonable as times are financially difficult ATM. The vet I am using for my dog is not our the vet I use for my other pets as he is extremely car sick so I have to take him to the local one but not the one I'd use by choice. Basically he will always get skin infections and ear infections almost monthly as he has so many allergies. But the vet charges me for the consultation even though the dog is one and the vet has has £££££££. Also a follow up consultation which now I'm so pissed of I wouldn't even go to if I can see it's cleared. They refuse to just give him the medicine even though it has been said what it is and he will have it for life. I have now waited due to covid 19 four days for medicine while the dog suffers as wouldn't answer emergency phone number so unsure why as someone's dog could of been run over or dying. I am getting the meds tonight after waiting all day but will be charged consultation. I'm just sick of it he had it from so quickly after I got him he isn't insured for it. I love my dog but it's bankrupting me as lost job now I will have to go without so he can have the meds at all until I can find another job. I don't mind paying for the medicine but is a consultation fee the norm for this. Sorry long rant over I hate that vets but the trauma to get him elsewhere would be cruel to the dog. It's all £££££ with vets. No payment plan offered have to do bank transfer before I can even get the pills.

Thanks all for your advice. Will try everyone's suggestions. It has been really helpful as I hadn't heard of alot of it. I'm sure the dog will be very grateful in the future too 🙂

We saw a specialist dermatologist.
Good luck OP.

If you always get the same prescription could you ask them how much a private prescription would cost and buy a large pack of the antibiotics online?

SanFranBear · 11/05/2020 21:15

Apologies if mentioned but ask the vets for a repeat prescription and then buy from a registered online vet pharmacy (animed direct is excellent).. they will check with your vets before dispensing but its saved me a small fortune on repeat medication for my cat which he has to have daily.

I do pay approx £18 for the initial prescription each and then about £30 for the meds every couple of months, but it does three repeats, so approx 6 months of medication for my boy.

Is the medication Apoquel?? My staffie gets that and it costs a bloody fortune and it's not covered by insurance! We are managing by giving 2 piriton a day and using Cooper and Gracie shampoo, the change in her skin is amazing and her funky smell has gone, grass is definitely the trigger as she escaped when we were cutting the grass and rolled in it and got a terrible flare up!
