Where does your dog sleep?

We've just bought a puppy and so far he's slept in a fluffy bed on the kitchen floor. He's locked in the kitchen all night which means if he weeks or poos it's on a surface which cleans easily but we're thinking of getting a cage so he doesn't wee and poo through the night. He's 13 weeks old and his general toilet training is hit and miss. I asked friends and their dogs range from sleeping on their bed to outside and various arrangements of basket, sofa, etc. I'm curious to see where most dogs sleep 🤔

Our dog sleeps beside us in her our bed and has done since we got her.

Our two sleep in cages/crates in the kitchen, one has no door (full run of kitchen/dining room, full length of large house) where as our females large cage has a door which we close on a night to avoid her harassing our older boy. Works well for us, this has been the case since they were pups! It's their space and they take themselves off to bed often 🤣

@OliveToboogie sounds exactly like our basset! She starts off in her bed, but somehow by the morning she is not only on the bed, but under the duvet.

Either on the floor in my room or on stairs outside the bedroom. Or she buggers off to her bed in kitchen.

Mine started off in a crate but his whining woke up the children. So I let him sleep under my bed. This allowed him to wake me up at midnight, to let him out for a wee. He started sleeping all through the night without needing a wee, around 9 months old. Your puppy is very young and needs letting outside for a wee in the middle of the night.

Hate crates and would never do this to any dog let alone a baby. Sad

Ours sleep in a variety of places - wherever they want basically - and one of them sleeps on the bed.

DuckingHeckers · 09/05/2020 00:48

In my bed with me. All 3. sigh

In my bed with me. All 3

Our last little fella used to sleep downstairs in the kitchen in an open crate. He loved it, I think he felt safe there. He never stirred until we arose in the mornings. Oh how lucky we were...

Now here we are with two new(ish) additions. Both also rescues. The first we tried to train him the same way but he gets very upset when he's alone at night so we gave up after a long time of trying (45 mins) and let him sleep on the floor in our room. That lasted a couple of weeks and he's been on the bed since.

Our newest newish addition ( we have her since Feb), well we couldn't leave her out. She decides which bed to sleep on each night.

What have I become..Shock

Grassynoel · 11/05/2020 17:36

Just to add, when I said how lucky we were I was referring to the fact that cuteness no.1 is an early riser. He's up at 7am EVERY morning and straight to it.

The princess may or may not get up then too but if she does, she has brekkie, poop and scampers back up to bed!Grin

My dog sleeps in his basket on the floor in my room. He doesn't bother anyone and he will snooze until I get up whenever that is! Best decision I ever made?

40somethingJBJ · 15/05/2020 12:51

My 12yo girl has the run of the house, but she doesn’t come upstairs. She has a lovely, raised, comfy bed, but I generally find her laid on the horrible scratchy doormat by the front door when I come down in the morning! When she was a tiny puppy, she was in a crate at the side of my bed, as we lived in a bungalow at the time, so nice and easy to get her outside when she woke up. Once she was clean overnight, I moved the crate out of my room gradually into the kitchen and started leaving the door open. Once I knew I could trust her not to trash the place, she had run of the house.

twilightcanine · 15/05/2020 13:03

In the bedroom - which is where he's always been.

In a crate for about the first six months then with a bed that he never used. Now there is no bed and he just hops on and off the human bed through the night, as he wishes. So, about 75% on the floor, 35% on the bed.

allfalldown47 · 15/05/2020 13:09

Op do you not get up in the night to let him out? We did this with our pup until she had better control. It wasn't fun for a couple of weeks but not the end of the world and we always expected the early days to be super cute but hard work!

petrocellihouse · 15/05/2020 13:21

Both of mine follow me everywhere in the house... and I mean everywhere... so after my husband died, they have migrated to sleeping on (or sometimes in!) my bed. You'd think having a superking size would accommodate us nicely, but I regularly wake up to a wet nose, pressed close to my face letting me know very gently, that as it's light outside, perhaps I could consider getting up and doing something about breakfast. Even if it is 5:00am!

Justtheoneplease · 15/05/2020 13:25

Ours sleeps either on our bed or our daughters bed. He has his own bed in our bedroom but as daughter has just got a super snuggly new kingsize bed he's preferring that at the moment. However he is like clockwork, every night at 10.00 he let's us know he wants a wee. Then his bedtime treat and then takes himself upstairs. So sweet, such a good boy and gives THE BEST CUDDLES EVER.
