Does anyone here own giant breeds?

If so please tell me all about them and living with them Grin

I’ve thought of the usual expense, space issues but what’s the reality like?

Also what car do you have to fit them in?!

Pet safe solvit telescopic pet ramp extra large. 119-220cm large dogs £124 on Amazon.
@Family143 it’s big though. Check dimensions to make sure it fits in the car once you’ve got the dog in!

Surely the environmental impact of a giant breed is....massive? Couldn't you get just as much love and pleasure from a much smaller animal that wouldn't have an environmental footprint close to that of a human?

Wolfiefan · 20/05/2020 18:04

Or I could choose a horse? Hmm

*@Yesbutisittouching I saw that episode with the ridiculous woman picking up a puppy in heels. Was there any follow up to whether she kept him, moved or grew some brains ?

Yesbutisittouching · 20/05/2020 19:19

@sunshineCake no not as far as I know. There was a clip after the behaviourist had been, she’d changed the dog’s name 🙄 and was still in the flat with the massive dog. Honestly heartbreaking they need so much space and love being outdoors. They are not a house-loving breed as they just get too hot!

I also remember that show and my husband and I were actually talking about it the other day. There is no way she'd have got a dog from our Breeder.

It was so irresponsible, the way she went to get it on train and seemed totally unprepared. I would love to see an update actually.

I think the BBC might be doing a similar series as I saw an advert looking for families for the show

I have a Newfie but I can't call her giant as she's pretty much fully grown and only 43kg. Grin We call her a pocket Newf. She's the loveliest thing but was a total dick as a puppy. She's only 21 months so kind of still a puppy now, but she has calmed down a lot.

I'd love a Berner and a Leonberger, but definitely not more than one at once. Grin

My sister has a Wolfie, who is also lovely.

Big dogs are the best.

Gin4thewin · 20/05/2020 19:45

My mum has DDB, which i don't think are classed as giants but her 2 boys are bloody huge, english mastiff size. Always get comments, but theyre soft ad muck.

Id kill for a st bernard or an irish wolf hound. I fell in love with them about 6yo at crufts.

Work hard, trade my 3 bed semi in for a farm with a few acres and ill be set to get them 🤣

Family143 · 20/05/2020 20:25

@Wolfiefan Thank you.

Wolfiefan · 20/05/2020 20:27

You’re welcome.

I use this ramp [https://www.doghealth.co.uk/products/new-model-petramp?variant=42570962506&gclid=CjwKCAjwqpP2BRBTEiwAfpiD-zfUTsl-aKa3MF93_AQtnh-uXVzhWZpG0IVHnNATZb7Y-wKxCrZtlBoChJsQAvD_BwE]
Not too bulky, fairly inexpensive and takes dogs up to 90kg
I did add extra gripper tape as our car has a high tailgate. So far so good.
