Our lovely lab cross was pts on Tuesday, we literally had 2 hours to get our heads round it. Monday night we noticed she didn't want to sit on the sofa , chose the rug instead very unusual. Tuesday morning she seemed to be breathing in her back instead of chest. My Dh took her to the vets who asked us to get her to the nearest animal hospital for an ultrasound and tests. Turns out she had cancer and her lungs and heart were being crushed by all the fluid around them. She had been on walks at the weekend and the day before, we had no signs anything was wrong. She had to be put down a few hours later. We had had her since she was 6 weeks old and she was 12. I just can't forget her standing there with us all crying over her as she was pts. I loved her so much I just keep crying all I want is to be back down the woods with her playing with us chasing sticks, miss her so much. Not asking for advice just wanted to write it all down 😢I feel so sad.

@JKScot4 ah not you crying too☹️. My DH has held it all in about his mum and Cleo dying was the trigger, he just broke down when the vet said it was cancer.

What a gorgeous girl. So sorry Thanks

mineofuselessinformation · 26/04/2020 22:01

She's lovely, OP,
She didn't want to show you how ill she was, because her love for you overcame that, so please don't blame yourself for it.
She went on as long as she could, and then it was her time to go.
To be this loyal to you, she must have known how loved and valued she was.
I'm so sorry she had to go. Thanks

Parkandride · 26/04/2020 22:04

Oh OP Cleo is beautiful, I'm so sorry and a little misty eyed thinking of how much you must miss her Flowers

SciFiWoman · 26/04/2020 22:08

Cleo... it’s a lovely name, had a German Shepherd in 1985 called Cleo. I’ve had GSDs all my life, the current one is slyly trying to nudge me off the sofa🙄.
I hope you feel better soon, it’s so over-whelming at first, you miss them being around.
Rest assured you gave her the best possible life and were with her when she left you. Sending you much love xx🐾

MaureenSowerbutts · 26/04/2020 22:08

So sorry for your loss, what a gorgeous girl xx

SciFiWoman · 26/04/2020 22:11

I think we’re all having a little cry at the moment... for you and your loss, and our own lovely ones we’ve loved and lost Xx

catwithnohat · 26/04/2020 22:14

pumpkin So sorry, it's so heartbreaking when a family member dies, all you can do is try and remember the good times Flowers

Windyatthebeach · 26/04/2020 22:14

My dgm had a huge mastiff cross called Cleo. I was a baby and apparently she wouldn't let my df anywhere near me!! Sixth sense that ddog!!
That stick op!! Your Cleo had great ambition!!
What a happy face!

Pleasedontdothat · 26/04/2020 22:16

So sorry to read about Cleo - what a lovely looking dog. It will take time but gradually the happy memories will take over again. We found out that our lovely elderly cat has got bladder cancer - she’s at home with us on painkillers and still seems to be enjoying curling up with me on the sofa and ‘helping’ me with my Pilates but it’s just a matter of time now.

We lost our lovely yellow lab suddenly just over three weeks ago. She had a massive tumour around her spleen which bled. We had no idea. Vet couldn’t stop the bleeding. It was horrible as we just handed her over to the vet in the car park expecting to see her again. Didn’t say goodbye as we didn’t realise we needed to. Miss her so much. And our other lab misses her too.

Huge sympathy. It’s horrible. So horrible.

pumpkinpie01 · 26/04/2020 23:14

@Peridot1 oh that's awful , how heartbreaking, what a horrible shock. Cleo was such an unusual mix - mum was a pedigree lab and dad was half kelpie half collie. Amazing temperament, she never growled , was brilliant with kids and boy did she love her sticks . She would run up behind us on a walk with a big 6 ft one and we would all jump out of the way laughing at her, before we got whacked around the back of the knees ! My little boy is gonna miss those walks so much😢. Big hugs to everyone that has been through the same Thanks.

She’s beautiful OP. Her eyes look so kind and expressive in the first photo. Sending love to you and your family Flowers

So sorry to you too Peridot1 Flowers

Morporkia · 27/04/2020 03:05

I’m so sorry 💐 my Oscar was it’s in September and, like you, it was a shock as none of us realised that he was ill. I had planned to have a little memorial for him on what would have been his birthday and bury a little casket of his fur, his lead and one of his favourite balls and then plant a tree. But Covid. All I can say is let it out, grieve, remember her as she once was and talk about her often. It really does help xxx

pilates · 27/04/2020 06:15

I’m so sorry for your loss, can’t imagine what you’re going through right now. It sounds like she had a lovely life and hope you get a little comfort from that 💐

pumpkinpie01 · 27/04/2020 09:42

@Morporkia sorry you have gone through this too, so hard getting used to not having her here , would you /did you get another dog ? @pilates thank you

So sorry for your loss, she looks like a Very Good Girl.

spiderlight · 27/04/2020 15:17

Oh, what a beautiful girl she was, and so proud of her giant stick! It sounds as if she had the most lovely life with you. Losing her so quickly must have been the most awful shock for you all. we had similar with our old girl a few yeas back - had the cancer diagnosis on the Friday and had to let her go on the Monday when the specialist we'd pinned all our hopes on said that it was such an aggressive type that there was nothing she could do. They take such a huge part of our hearts with them when they go, but I try to think of it that we bear the pain so they don't have to. Flowers

pumpkinpie01 · 27/04/2020 15:34

@spiderlight I like that thought that we bear the pain , sorry you have been through this too. we would have hated to see her suffering. So glad we took her when we did as at first we thought maybe she was just tired and hot. It's so strange without her . My son that doesn't live at home is dropping his basset hound off later as I have managed to persuade my ds6 to go for a walk, he said it was pointless going without Cleo think walk will do him good , will be so strange going without her thou 😢

I feel your pain only too well.

Just before lockdown we lost our beloved dog. Like yours, the first thing I noticed was that Dog was not sleeping in his usual place, down by the side of my bed. To cut a short story short, he had bone cancer and I had to make the quick decision to have him pts. The pain was (and is) unbearable. He was The Best. We all sat with him holding a paw each as he was pts at the vet's. I'm crying now as I think about it. And I think about him all the time. A month on and his bed and his bowls are still there. I just can't bear to get rid of them.

I hope you enjoyed your walk today as much as you could right now, pumpkin ❤️

pumpkinpie01 · 27/04/2020 23:29

@IrmaFayLear ah you too , so many of us have been through this , a piece of the family gone 😢. Yea we did enjoy the walk and when my son started talking about Cleo I had a little cry especially when we got to the bit by the river where she would always clamber in. I didn't feel I should leave it much longer not going on our usual walk as we plan to scatter her ashes there and I didn't want that to be the next time we went. Big hugs to everyone who has lost a much loved 4 legged friend, oh god made myself cry again now fgs
