Dog for sons birthday

Roberts25 · 19/04/2020 21:00

So i'm getting my son a rough collie. Hes only turning three, so obviously it'll be me that'll be taking care of the dog with his help of making a mess trying to feed him. Hes been around dogs, cats and lambs a lot recently, hes very gentle, regardless, I will obviously not leave them alone together, probably wouldn't be able to anyway, since i cant even pee alone.

Anyway so i asked my son what he wanted to call him, and have asked a few times hoping hed change his mind. But no marshall is what he wants to call the dog. Hes paw patrol and fireman mad. Will it be silly to have a rough collie named afer a dalmation character?
Would it then be even more silly then to paint the kennel like a paw patrol kennel?
I know thats what he would like, but im just thinking am i just being OTT as I always tend to go with his birthdays and would it just sound and look silly considering its not a dalmation.

Literally now i asked about the dogs name and a dog house.

Why the long backstory about your 3 year old and plans for the dog then? You could have just asked the questions.
I’m sorry I can’t really answer those because I’m an adult who doesn't have any strong opinions on paw patrol - I could ask my 4 year old nephew for you though.

Roberts25 · 19/04/2020 21:59

Nope only need to be breastfed every hour to 2, followed by an explosion.
Also clearly you dont know my son, he would only nap outdoors, so whenever he need a nap id push him in a buggy for around 50 minutes sometimes 4 times a day . Honestly do not try and compare a dog to a baby. And babies scratch, puke, piss and shit through babygrows on you. Come off it. Honestly. You are really trying to make out a puppy is more difficult than a baby. You have got to be a man or a lucky lady that had a good sleeper and content baby that didnt constantly need something to entertain them. By son was standing at 6 months and walking at 8 months try that for nerve wrecking/ not able to take your eye of someone who has zero concept of danger.
Honestly now i asked for a dogs name and kennel. Literally a toddler post not for a crazy dog owner thread.

This post is making me cringe. Does nobody have young children and dogs?

The puppy will be living on a farm with somebody home the majority of the time, trained to work sheep to keep its mind occupied and a young boy to give it cuddles and love. I struggle to see why a breeder would want better. OP has had dogs and as she has other animals currently, sheep etc, she's already used to giving a lot of time to care for animals daily, alongside raising a toddler.

I could be wrong but I get the impression OP either works from home, or is a SAHM. If she was going out to a full time job nobody would be questioning if she had time to do that alongside raising a toddler. A puppy is needy but not 40 hours out of the house a week needy.

A Paw Patrol kennel sounds lovely, I bet your son will be delighted.

P0lka · 19/04/2020 22:00

No one cares about the frequency you breast fed. Answer the other questions

Roberts25 · 19/04/2020 22:01

I said those plans because i know how people are on these threads so tried to minimize the attacking as minimal as possible. But really didnt ask about getting a dog or not. Just wanted parents with toddlers to respond.

Wolfiefan · 19/04/2020 22:02

I’m neither a “man or a lucky lady”
Hmm
Shall leave you to it.
I need to take the dogs out for a wee and put them to sleep (not in a kennel) before hopefully getting some sleep and then doing another 16 hour day tomorrow whilst being chewed and trying to deal with family stuff too.

keepitupbuttercup · 19/04/2020 22:02

Love the idea. Might want to research more border collies though to be around livestock. Love the paw patrol theme 🙈 we have a dog and a 9 month old and considering getting another puppy. You know what you can and can't do. I'd just reconsider the breed

Roberts25 · 19/04/2020 22:03

What other questions detective/vet/dog reseacher/man who knows nothing about childcare who thinks dogs are harder than babies.LOL

LatteLoverLovesLattes · 19/04/2020 22:05

If it'll make DS happy, paint the kennel like paw patrol & call your dog Marshall - the vast majority of adults will not have a clue that 'Marshall' is a Dalmation or what the kennel is all about 🤷🏻‍♀️

Some posters around here seem to think you need their permission to get a dog. Their attitude actually does the board no favours because it puts people with genuine questions off of asking. Or in fact, just mentioning a dog at all! 🙄🙄

P0lka · 19/04/2020 22:05
  1. why work a rough collie
  2. what are you doing to prevent the medical conditions listed above
  3. how will it be a working dog and a pet
DivGirl · 19/04/2020 22:05

I don't think you understand that you aren't doing something good for your child - you're blurring the lines between what is appropriate and what isn't. Never give animals as pets. Ever.

What happens in three months time it doesn't work out and you decide to give the dog away? You buy your son a different birthday present? Turn the kennel in to a play house?

I think most importantly you should reconsider getting a dog because you just don't seem like a very nice person. Have you considered a cat?

P0lka · 19/04/2020 22:07

Divgirl I think that would be a bit mean to the cat! Haha Grin

MarchSurprise · 19/04/2020 22:07

@DivGirl how does the OP not seem like a nice person?! Totally unnecessary, she just wanted advice on a bloody kennel theme and name...

keepitupbuttercup · 19/04/2020 22:09

@P0lka how will it be a working dog and a pet

Working dogs can be wonderful pets. They are still as loving and well behaved as any other dog

Roberts25 · 19/04/2020 22:11

No one cares boy.

OP posts:
P0lka · 19/04/2020 22:13

Yes they can be - with the right dog, and the right handler. The majority of farm dogs (having lived and worked on farms for the majority of my life) are working dogs first - they will have 10 minutes of fuss on their own terms, but are largely motivated by work and rest, not human companionship. To be able to work sheep and be a docile family pet in the house takes a special dog, and good consistent training - I'm asking the OP how she will ensure both are in place.

P0lka · 19/04/2020 22:14

Boy? Pretty sure I've got tits and a vagina...

Roberts25 · 19/04/2020 22:21

Please leave me alone. I asked about a kenel and a name for a little boy.
But what i read was that they have an undercoat which sheads once a year, and their coat once a year which is typically around their birthdays. Theyre are brushes for this and advised on websites to buy two types of brushes. They have bad teeth so to brush their teeth. To bath them no more than 3 times a year or skin gets dry and irritated. To feed them no grain food, theres a website that lists the best food for rough collies with all nutrition content and extra supplements. Ive saved it. Chill. I live on a farm, ive helped birth so many animals, taken care of thousands. Chill. Ill research more. But no im not an expert. Neither do i want to be. I love dogs. So does my son. You do not know us. Stop being a pest and thinking because you know so much about a breed of dog you can be judgemental and patronising. If you want to help, then help. But you just want to make yourself feel good because you know a certain amount about a dog. Good for you. Pass that info on if you want instead of trying to diss people for not knowing as much as you. Jheeze.

OP posts:
Roberts25 · 19/04/2020 22:21

Sure ;)

OP posts:
Roberts25 · 19/04/2020 22:23

So im guessing you have a hunting dog or sheep dog yourself thats also a house dog? Because funnily enough all three of my sisters do.

OP posts:
Roberts25 · 19/04/2020 22:26

Ill know this for future refrence not to post it under dogs. Who knew people can get worked up over a child having a pet on a farm with a little house for itself.

OP posts:
cattaxi · 19/04/2020 22:32

@Roberts25 your idea sounds sweet. Who cares if the dog isn’t a Dalmatian. You sound like a lovely mum making things so sweet for your boy.

The only advice I will offer you is never, ever ask a dog question on Mumsnet. Seriously! It brings out all the crazies. No one should ever have a dog according to the usual suspects here. They make all sorts of negative assumptions about things they have no possible way of knowing. Just because you want to do something cute for your son doesn’t mean you don’t understand the responsibility of a dog. You could be a vet for all they know!
Do yourself a favour, hide this thread, call your dog whatever you want and enjoy! Some people really do have too much time on their hands.

Roberts25 · 19/04/2020 22:37

I get where you're coming from. But i grew up with a dog, so i find it difficult not to put my own experience into it. Of growing up with a dog.
I had one when i was a bit older too, i had to lave it to go to university. That wasnt fun.
I really dont like cats, ive had cats, living on a farm we had a lot of wild cats, some would be abandoned and i would sringe feed them and raise them.
I just dont like how they carry mice to the house as many do, and there would be a few to find on a farm. Or leaving a head by the door. No thanks.
But i do get your point. I have concidered it, its just hes an only child, and i feel it would be great for him to grow up with a dog. Like many do and many i know do.

Haha thank you. I did gather that these were very strange responses.

OP posts:
elizabethrose · 19/04/2020 22:40

I can see this post has kind of derailed from the original ask. But I'll hold my hands up to having a Paw Patrol dog...almost two. Our first is Marshall, they wanted to call the second Rubble but I had to put my foot down.
