Yesterday we had to put our beloved Ruby to sleep. Ruby was 14, she had a stroke previously which left her blind in one eye, had heart problems and was final stage kidney disease. Despite all that she was a happy, funny, full of life and heaps of personality little dog.
Yesterday she had hemorrhagic diarrhoea. It looked like someone had emptied a jar of strawberry jam over the floor. We decided that this was enough for her and didn't want her on more drugs to go with the 8 she was already on. I am an ex vet nurse so know the score.
We had to have her PTS in the boot of the car on a long drip line as we couldn't go in with her. They took her in to place a catheter in her and brought her out half sedated. They started the drip when we were ready. It wasn't the way I wanted her to go at all but under the circumstances at the moment it was the best I could have.
Now I'm having doubts about it all. Should I have tried on meds. I know in my head that if an owner had come with a dog like Ruby , PTS would have been suggested. Its just so fucking hard when it's your own.

I'm so sorry for your loss, of course it was absolutely the right thing to do Thanks she was clearly suffering and now she won't be. I think such doubts are perfectly natural.

I know it is the grief that is making me think the what ifs. I know I did the right thing. I just miss her so incredibly much.
Thank you, you lovely bunch of people. 💐

I sometimes think that if you worry it was too early, it was exactly the right time. Because if you absolutely know that it had to be done, it probably should have been done earlier if that makes sense? My dad used to say 'better a week too early than a day too late'

Oh bless you, of course you did the right thing. It never sits right with us making these decisions. But the poor love. The haemorrhagic diarrhoea is enough of a sign to tell you she couldn't have been feeling well in her body.
Having lived a long and happy life, she had a peaceful and beautiful passing, surrounded by her loving family. Please may you find comfort in that.
She is beautiful. What a lucky dog to have lived such a happy life. You'll sure miss her. But she knows no suffering now and that is a comfort.

You'lle? The added 'e' was unintentional. It's kind of silly writing this in light of the weight of your post, OP. But I didn't want you to think I was throwing around some Olde English/Tolkien language on you there. Wink

How devastating. It was the right decision but that doesn’t make it feel any easier. Beautiful dog. She had a lovely life, don’t forget that

I am so sorry. She looks like a total sweetheart but I think you absolutely did the right thing not to put her through any more. It's blooming hard though, I know

You made the right decision, but the right decision is often the hardest one.

It is such a privilege to share our lives with beloved pets. Take care OP Thanks

As CMOT said, better to worry it was too early than too late ... they trust us not to leave them in pain. We had our old boy pts a few weeks ago and it is always the right decision. Flowers

You absolutely did make the right decision.

And you made your decision out of love. Which is what she knew all her life with you, lucky girl.

Of course you will miss the little hairy recipient of your love. But she goes from this life wrapped in the love you gave her. What a beautiful thing you have done. X

I think you did the right thing. The last gift we can give them is to not let them suffer. She knew she was loved.
