Harness that a dog can't reverse and pull it over their heads! BOTH my dogs just did this! Diagram.

Just went for a walk in these harnesses.

Firstly my eldest dog was really nervous as we went to a new park and we had to cross an 8 lane parkway 😭 He started frwkaing out and pulled backwards away from me. His harness was tight but it started to slip over his head.

I had to carry him.

The wind picked up and for some reason he kept doing this!

Then at a park bench my puppy got tangled up around the leg and did the same thing, panicked and pulled back and she got her arms out and it was just round her neck like a collar

I shit myself

Does anyone know of a harness that will keep them secure from pulling backwards?

Please enjoy my completely unnecessary diagram.

Have you tried a Perfect Fit @NaughtyNoah? They're not cheap and you have to accurately measure your dog, but my DDog hasn't managed to get out of hers yet, and she does really try Wink

grannycake · 18/08/2022 08:27

Mine (a border terrier) has managed to escape from her perfect fit harness

rnsaslkih · 18/08/2022 08:32

My dog can escape from the perfect fit. I use it as an everyday harness but don’t generally walk him in it. I suppose some dogs are just more able shape wise to get it off.

ruffwear.co.uk/products/web-master-harness has 3 straps not two. I have a 5kg dog and we walk him in ruffwear harnesses.

SpotOnMyBot · 18/08/2022 08:34

Mine is a Houdini and can get out of a Perfect Fit.

Only one he can't escape from is the Ruffwear one with the extra strap around the belly (think it's the webmaster but it may be called something else now).

Now he's a bit older he doesn't bother trying to escape!

ParvuliThankYouDebbie · 18/08/2022 08:36

For any dogs I’m walking (I look after lots of different dogs) if I’m not entirely confident they won’t do this, I use a double lead attached to both the harness and collar just in case, so I’ve still got some control.

Impossiblepossibilities · 18/08/2022 10:50

Most rescues, particularly sighthound rescues, recommend the Ruffwear escape proof style harnesses with the extra belly strap, but you mentioned you have a tiny dog and they are a lot of hardware for the real tinies.

I have a tiny pup who has a large, narrow ribcage and tiny waist and he’s in the Perfect Fit Tiny Range. He’s tried to back out of his harness a couple of times when something has scared him, but it’s a really good fit, so he hasn’t managed it. If you give them a call with his measurements they can advise you re size or even recommend somewhere to get one properly fitted. The only disadvantage of the Tiny Range is that they don’t have the front lead attachment.

Fwiw, I used Perfect Fit harnesses with my sighthounds as well and neither of them ever managed to back out of one, despite one trying on several occasions. The key is making sure they are properly fitted.

MyGirlDaisy · 18/08/2022 10:59

Ruffwear Webmaster or like @ParvuliThankYouDebbie says, a double ended lead attached to the collar and harness, I also walk different dogs and this is what I do with the Houdini types.

Floralnomad · 18/08/2022 11:14

The Indi dog Houdini I mentioned earlier is suitable for dogs of all sizes

Ruffwear webmaster, or similar type with the extra belly strap. They are recommended for former street dogs who are at risk of spooking and running off. My dog is snake like and can calmly step out of 'normal' harnesses, but not this one

I second a ruffwear webmaster. The second belly strap is fab. My very nervous rescue could escape his other harnesses but this one is great. They aren’t cheap, but totally worth it

Purplecatshopaholic · 18/08/2022 11:24

Also agree re a double ended lead - I attach my boys lead to his collar and his harness. Works brilliantly

SirChenjins · 18/08/2022 11:29

Perfect Fit - absolutely brilliant thing. I've got a bag full (literally) of harnesses I bought that he backed out of or wriggled out of, wish I'd gone for the Perfect Fit (properly fitted) from the outset.

GuyFawkesDay · 18/08/2022 12:10

Perfect fit or Ruffwear. Fenrir do one with an extra strap but possibly not in right size for your dog.

Julius K9 are awful things, unsafe and hinder natural movement.

Sitdowncupoftea · 18/08/2022 17:01

Buy a harness made to fit your dog. I wouldn't touch a shop bought one. There are online harness makers that tell you how to measure your dog and it will be made to fit. It won't be one of those one with cheap plastic clips. They are not expensive try Sass harnesses.

Frustratedandsneezy · 19/08/2022 18:11

Either get the greyhound styles with the two waistbands (they go pretty small for whippets etc) or as others have said double ended lead and attach to the collar as well

Frustratedandsneezy · 19/08/2022 18:14

This kind of thing

Patchyman1 · 22/08/2022 23:10

Pets at home 3 Peak excursion harness, recommended by the rescue we got our boy from. Has 3 clips, we also attach a double ended lead, one end to harness and one to collar

Branster · 23/08/2022 07:27

No advise as I have zero knowledge about harnesses but I love the diagram!!!!
