Eye Infection

my dog has woken up with an eye infection and I’ve just phoned my vets to see if I can order some drops but they said they cannot do this without an appointment. So that will be £50 for a five minute appointment. What do all of you do? Does anyone have a home remedy?

I go to the vet - eye infections can cause eyeball damage and blindness if not treated properly. The vet is also able to use a dye to check there is no damage already to the eye.

You can buy eye drops for dogs from places like Pets at Home or online. The problem is whether it’s something more serious going on behind the scenes that’s causing it so I can see why the vets have asked you to take the dog down.

Hope your dog is ok and it’s simply an eye infection. I just didn’t want to say ‘pop some eye drops in and the dog will be ok’.
Last year a family members dog had an eye infection and it turned out it was a lot more than that going on. Better to be safe than sorry.

I always use a cold tea bag first. But only if the eye is just a bit gunky. Any redness etc I would want to see a vet.

You have "diagnosed" an eye infection. That doesn't mean your dog has one. If it does, the infection may be secondary to another condition. Your vets would be negligent if they gave out antibiotic drops without checking your dog's eye. It is reasonable for you to pay them for their expertise.

One condition that presents as an "eye infection" is a melting ulcer, which is an ophthalmic emergency. There are other serious eye conditions causing sudden onset of redness and discharge.

Ours gets them a lot
Vets told us to just clean it if it’s gunky and not worry
But always bring them in if it starts to bother them (pawing at it, squinting, swollen etc)

Yep it was an infection, eye drops and £50 bill.

You don't have to buy the meds from the vet, you can ask them for a prescription and order online. I got ear drops for £6 online rather than £30 from the vets

Cold tea bags and if not cleared up after a day or so then try people conjunctivitis eye drops. Same ingredients as dog ones and much much cheaper

Cold tea bags? So do I make a cup of tea and let the tea bag cool down and place on his eye and for how long?

But if it had been an ulcer and the vets had just put up the drops without checking and then your dogs globe had ruptured who would you be blaming.
