The hair. Dear God, the hair...

The one thing we didn't discover in our fairly extensive research before getting BastardPup was that the breed is notorious for shedding. He is nearly 2 and I swear he sheds enough every week to knit a new dogConfused

Took him for a full groom yesterday and they took a ton of hair off him. I have washed all of his bedding. We have a Shark hoover (which he loathes). I am still covered in sodding dog hair.

Do I just resign myself to buying new bedding every six weeks? Despite being lint rolled, shaken well and washed, his blanket is still completely covered. Or am I missing a trick?

My mum used to joke that when she adopted a rescue German shepherd she didn't realise she was getting shag carpets as well!
That's why when I was looking at dog breeds low shedding was one if the must have characteristics.

We have to cater for this... By cater I mean eat white hairs regularly ...

Would a blaster thing work to remove loose hair? (Can’t think of the right name. Used by groomers!)
I have a moulty beast but luckily I can keep her hand stripped.
Had a long haired cat and used a furminator on her.

pigsDOfly · 21/02/2020 00:28

My dog is long haired. She's not shedding too much at the moment but my home is permanently covered in long, wavey hair.

I hate to think how much fur I've swallowed over the last, nearly, nine years.

I swear, one day I'm going to start coughing like a cat and I'll bring up a large ginger fur ball.

BlankTimes · 21/02/2020 01:32

Long haired cat, i've found the "plush" type fleece used as throws and bedding lets all the shed hair slide off.

Dyson do an attachment for getting pet hair off furniture and fabrics, I've found this really good.

I also saw this video, it's only okay if your pet can tolerate the noise of a dyson though

The product for dissolving pet hair on bedding is called Vamoosh.

I haven't used it so can't comment if it's any good.

Robot cleaner has been game changer - researched time get one that can cope with dog hair. Show lab and he constantly sheds. Set robot to clean just before home time so I don't walk into fur city.
Rubber brush and meile cat and dog for carpeted area. Leather sofa and dog stays downstairs helps.

Witchonastick · 24/02/2020 13:40

We have a double coated giant breed.
Dog hair is part of our lives! If we had a robo vac thingy I’m sure we’d find it upside down and choked to death in no time.

Wolfiefan · 24/02/2020 13:50

Haha @Witchonastick
Same here. wolfiepups could see off a swarm of roombas!

Our jack russell has been dead for just over 3 years. I still find his hairs in strange places, they just seem to appear out of the ether. I used to give him a thorough brushing once a week in the garden, and great clods of hair would be forever floating round the beds and lawn. To look at him you would never have said he was an excessively hairy dog. (Photo attached so you can see).
It's one of the reasons why we now have a non moulting poodle!

TheDogsMother · 24/02/2020 14:10

Our Jack Russell sheds hair continually and it is everywhere. We hoover all the time, have every type of hair removing device but the battle is lost. I have lowered my standards considerably which has helped and am considering a capsule wardrobe of black, white and tan. Grin

ChinUpChestOut · 24/02/2020 14:25

DBeagle should be bald the amount he sheds. I deliberately chose the breed on the understanding that they didn't shed excessively.

Oh how they shed. Enough fur balls floating around the house to suggest I have 6 cats permanently coughing up. I have a Dyson V6 which is coming to the end of its useful life if only because it stinks of stale DBeagle, despite washing all the parts that can be washed (Dyson not DBeagle).

On the rare occasion when he consents to a bath (he gives me the death stare throughout), I can get rid of all the loose hair and we have a fur free few days. But he hates a bath. So for the most part, I just vacuum every day, wipe off the willy stains from my cushions, the mucky paw prints from my leather sofa, and the nose smears from my front window (favourite position so that he can welcome me home in the appropriate manner).

I luffs him to bits though.

Rubber brushes are your friend!

For the furniture and bedding, not the dog.

adaline · 24/02/2020 14:32

@ChinUpChestOut what a gorgeous Beagle!

Ours doesn't really shed unless he's wet thankfully, but I think we just got lucky with that one Grin

Namechange8471 · 24/02/2020 14:37

We have 2 dogs , so can sympathise!

That vamoosh stuff is shite, paid nearly a fiver for it and it done fuck all.

Same as pp just constantly change throws on the couch etc. Don’t let them on the bed 😂

somm · 24/02/2020 21:41

morporkia, I feel for you - 'I would do anything for a dog hair in my coffee right now 😔'. Did you hold on to that clump of fur? Sad as it is, it brings them back for a brief time. I also have a shredded dew claw from a very clumsy greyhound. It sums her up so well, as she was constantly getting herself into clumsy scrapes.

somm · 24/02/2020 21:54

So many funny messages on here, and I love whynosnowhereyet's photo. We're on our forth rescue sighthound, and for the first time we have a male greyhound. To look at him you'd think, 'He's got really short hair and it looks quite coarse'. It turns out his hair is softer than swansdown and lighter than air. It doesn't shed, it rises into the ether and then descends. I'm constantly picking up (very light) balls of fluff that are made up of his hair and dust. I struggle to throw them into the bin because his hair is too light to maneouvre. On the plus side, to rid the house of his hair I'd have to dust/hoover twice a day. I'm not going to do that, so I've opted on the side of 'I'm going to be fighting a losing battle' and allowed myself to clean up once a fortnight (month) instead Grin.

I've taken to hoovering the dog, I use the small handheld contraption thing and he's ok with it 👍
