Puppy have we left it too late to move crate out of bedrrom

Puppy is v good sleeper, wakes up for a wee still at about 3,30 but straight back to sleep. In crate.

I’d like to move her downstairs, but she’s been upstairs for 3 weeks now. She’s 11 woks.

Friend suggested in bigger crate with puppy pad, other friend suggested in a bed in the kitchen with puppy pads or newspaper. And then continue housetraining as usual in day.

Any thoughts?

I wouldn’t use puppy pads or newspaper. That’s a backwards step.
Why do you want her downstairs?

I'd personally keep her with me until she was reliably going through the night. Then slowly move the crate out of the bedroom and to the spot I want it - creeping it further away a little each night.

I’m worried she’ll think it’s a punishment to be left downstairs if I leave it till she’s older. We don’t want her upstairs for bed in the future, she’ll be downstairs in the kitchen.

Can you move her but sleep downstairs until she is dry all night? Or I would wait until she doesn’t need the toilet overnight.

I dont really want to sleep.downstairs, it wouldn't be comfortable. And it seems like it can take up to 16 weeks to be dry through night which seems like a long time to have her upstairs before moving her downstairs.

Move her downstairs but set an alarm to take her out and keep moving the alarm back a bit every week?

Why does she need a wee in the night, current dog is 16 months and has been dry through the night since we got her at about 10 weeks I think, before this she was in a split crate, small sleeping area and a small area for nocturnal wee etc.
Take water up after evening feed.
Personally I would move her to the kitchen ASAP
Have you spoken to the breeder? I assume some dogs need a night time wee? None of ours ever have?
I wouldn't put pads in the crate as already mentioned its a step backwards.
Its about routine, wake after food, when you come in etc, out for toilet, they soon get the hang of it

Our dpuppy is crated downstairs (other dogs for company tho) me and dh take turns setting alarm to take her for a wee! No way could I sleep with a dpuppy in the room!!

It’s really not unusual for a dog to need a nighttime pee at such a very young age. My pup is 18 weeks and just going through the night now.
No pup should be denied water either.

As another poster said, move the crate out of the bedroom, landing first then downstairs, and set an alarm for 3am to get up and take her out.

Start moving her out slowly but keep your door open so you can hear if she needs a wee (does she cry?)
Ours was occasionally going out until about 12 weeks and then now holds it all night
So by the time you’ve worked the crate downstairs she may have stopped waking in the night

If not, once she’s downstairs and in the kitchen /too far to hear just get a cheap second hand baby monitor so you can hear when she wakes up and go take her out.

I don’t think it’s too late now at all to move her. Provided you can hear if she needs the toilet you just get up as usual.
Maybe give her a few bed time treats at night when she goes into her pen that’s further away, to show it’s not a punishment if you’re worried about that.

At 11 weeks one night time wee is very good going. Some puppies take a lot longer.

She's still a baby so keeping her in your room a bit longer will help to make her feel settled and, no you haven't left it too late to move her. As pp said, leave her till she's going overnight without a wee.

And whatever you do do not start putting puppy pads or newspaper in her crate or anywhere else. Encouraging her to wee indoor is never a good idea.

Just give her a bit more time.

Move her downstairs slowly but expect a step back in night-time toileting if you do so. She might not be able to wake you up in time if you're no longer in the same room. You could you use a baby monitor or a doggy cam or something though so you can keep an eye on her.

But don't put newspaper or puppy pads down - you'll just undo all your hard work and teach her that toileting inside is acceptable.
