BEAGLES- what do I need to know?

We may be getting an adult beagle. First dog as a family, I've always wanted one but the time has never been right for a dog before. She has always been a family pet and not a working dog but her current owners are separating and neither have the space for a dog any more. Poor baby.

I've heard they are difficult to train, prone to getting a bit smelly, but affectionate and friendly. (Just like ds2 actually, it will fit in brilliantly)

What else do I need to know?

Hard to train, run away and wont come back, bay, not good pets really

Rubbish.

Mine is loving, fun, brilliant with children, loves nothing more than sitting with their head on my lap. Yes, they love food (just don't over feed them). They are so placid and mine has never shown an aggressive side.

WheresMyChocolate - most of what you've said is nothing like mine. They like a walk but love sleeping and being warm.

longearedbat · 20/01/2020 18:45

@WheresMyChocolate beagle packs are hunted on foot, not on horseback. You need to be really fit to go out with, and follow, a beagle pack. I don't know what they hunt since the ban - I expect they follow a trail.

adaline · 20/01/2020 18:48

With respect, that's my experience of being a dog foster carer for many years.

Well, your description of them hunting with horses is wrong - that's foxhounds, for starters. At least get the breed right before you make comments!

QueenOfOversharing · 20/01/2020 20:11

Thank you @MargotB7 @longearedbat @adaline 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

I hear this so often & it gets on my nerves.

Doesn't help that my other dog is a rescue staffy - you can imagine what I have to deal with there!! 🙄

MargotB7 · 20/01/2020 20:35

Every Staffy I have known has been lovely.

The only thing I find bizarre about my Beagle is that she will bark at dogs going by our house if she is inside looking out of the window. Then if we are out walking she doesn't seem bothered about other dogs.

Next door have 2 beagles, lovely dogs but they are LOUD!

My ddog has started howling back at them when they bay.

But they're very cute.

MargotB7 · 20/01/2020 20:53

weegiemum that's funny.

Thinking about it the only time I've heard mine bay is when I've come back from taking my other little dog to the groomers. She hates me taking him and leaving her at home. They are best friends though.

Yeah, I would say the only negative is the noise. Mine caught a scent on a walk last Sunday and it was so noisy - pulling and baying like a mad thing. A man with a lovely Frenchie was looking at me with great pity as I was hopelessly stood there going "Archie, will you STOP THAT" Grin

Oldmotherhubbardsbigbottom · 28/01/2020 21:36

She is here. And just gorgeous :)
So chilled and seems grateful about EVERYTHING- she was not mistreated in any way in her previous home but sounds like she might have missed out on a bit of attention, and now she is having 2 walks a day plus cuddles virtually non stop she seems very very glad!

She seems super smart - eg she's already clocked onto which is my dog walking coat and goes into the hall whenever I get it off the hook Smile. It might be that all dogs are like this but she's the first one I've had as a proper bona fide adult and I can't remember these details of the lovely dogs we had as a family growing up.

I think the fact that I am a novice dog owner might actually work in my favour because my expectations are quite low, and so whatever I get I'm pretty happy with haha! I'm not expecting her to change that much to suit me, but I am going to put effort into attempting some training with her as she is so delighted to be rewarded for the right behaviour with a tiny bit of chicken! Who am I to deny her that little bit of happiness ;)

I'm trying to keep everything pretty low key and steady for her at the moment, it must be so overwhelming and confusing. I'm trying to think how it must seem to her, hopefully she will start to trust that we are her people soon enough.

She's snoring very happily next to me on the sofa, the cat is on my lap, my children are away at my ex husbands house as per usual on a Tuesday and I've got Virgin River on the tv. Bloody excellent evening!

Thanks for helping me to go into Beagle ownership with my eyes slightly open!

Awww so happy for you Smile

Do we get a picture?!

Haggisfish · 29/01/2020 00:02

JEALOUS!!!!

Motorina · 29/01/2020 07:18

Agree with adaline. Further advice/help/support is conditional on a picture 😉
