This is the year I’m going to get a dog!

What kind of dog should I get?

I have two kids, 7 and 10. 10 year old has autism. For this reason I am think Labrador/ retriever.

I live in a first floor flat. For this reason I am thinking whippet.

I have a secure garden. I live two minutes from a beach and loads of parks. The dog won’t be left home alone, only in rare and unexpectedly circumstances.

What do you think?

My dm has a Cockerpoo, got him at 8 weeks, she lives in a flat and had no problems toilet training him. He was easier than all other dogs I know. She used training pads until he was holding his wee longer (16 weeks I think) then went straight to only toileting on walks. Never had an accident!

I'd recommend a rescue dog! You can usually view them online on websites for rescues near you, and if you go into a rescue they'll usually ask you what you're looking for and get you and your family to meet with dogs that would suit you. Its a great feeling to give a home to a dog in need, and it's very good to teach your kids about rescue animals and help them to be more understanding of other people and animals. We've had our rescue for 2 and a half years, and he's just turned 3 recently, never met such a calm, gentle and loving dog - also didn't have to try to keep the kids away from him as he started teething since we got him when he'd passed that stage. But if you're set on getting a puppy, I'd recommend a crossbreed, ours is a belgian shepherd X rhodesian ridgeback rescue and you usually find they have better health and a more settled personality that purebred dogs xx

Eventually got a dog, now 7
Months old lovely wee lurcher! She’s brilliant , gentle and calm, loads of fun on walks and easy to train. Toilet trained by 15 weeks. Bladder of steel! She’s ideal!
