Can I give my puppy a raw chicken leg?

We’re taking him to the in laws on Boxing Day, he’s 15 weeks and I need something to keep him occupied in his pen whilst we’re eating. Kongs don’t take him long, I haven’t got time to go to the butchers for a bone and all he does with antlers/puppy chews is frantically try to find a good place to bury them. Oh and he doesn’t like kongs when they’re frozen.

Any suggestions?

He’s great when we eat, I put him in his pen and he sits in his bed and I give him a treat every 5 mins or so. He’ll occasionally grumble but I just ignore him and he gets a treat when he’s quiet. If I time it right he’ll sometimes fall asleep. I just think in a new environment with new people he’s going to need something more to distract him plus it won’t be a quick meal (not that it’ll go on for long but it’d be nice to have longer to eat and chat).

NO absolutely not. Never ever ever give your dog - puppy or otherwise a raw chicken bone or flesh. Jesus

@Namaste6

Oh my gosh are you serious?! 😂 raw chicken is perfectly fine! It’s what dogs are designed to eat. I can promise you they’re a lot better than whatever you feed your dog!

OP your dog will be absolutely fine! Just supervise that’s all. Though to be fair when my dog was only 10 weeks she’d still have her chicken wings eaten within 15 minutes

It is absolutely fine to give raw chicken but I wouldn't do it unsupervised. Start with a chicken wing and slowly build up to larger pieces. Have you tried freezing the kongs? Peanut butter or soft cheese frozen inside?

What kind of things are you putting in his Kong?

Ddog will spend ages trying to get dog biscuits out of his Kong but when we put softer things in its over pretty quick.

My pup has deer antler, deer hide natural type chews which take ages to chew on, I'm planning to give him on in his crate on Xmas day when we are eating. Anything natural would be good like JR chews from a pet shop which will last a while, as long as you check on him if it's his first time with them

Non weight bearing bones only

I know you said he’s not keen on frozen food in a kong , but I usually save the chicken carcas after a roast, boil it up in water for a few hours, sieve all the bones etc out and purée it up. Leave it in the fridge and it turns to a jelly/mouse so easy to fill kong up with. My dog absolutely goes crazy for it - like chicken sorbet 🤣
