Hi all just looking for a little support,
My mums 12 year old dog was put down tonight and it was the hardest thing I've ever done. He was a 12 year old greyhound, he fell down the stairs earlier today and fractured his leg and they said they couldn't do anything for him. Before me and my husband had our son, the dog (bolt) was our absolute Bestfriend we would have him round every single day,give the little guy anything he wanted he was our baby. My mum has disabilities so we would take him for long walks and feed him e.t.c. The bond we had with him was so strong we felt the same for him as we do our son now. I'm just so sad I can't believe it's happened? I feel numb at the moment. He was such a good boy and I'm going to miss him so much.

I'm so sorry OP, it's just impossibly hard to deal with. Im sure you gave him a fabulous life, try and take comfort from that. I struggled so much after the loss of our last dog, I absolutely get where you are at the moment. I'm giving our dog a big cuddle now in recognition of how precious they are to us x

Hi everyone sorry I haven't said anything at all today it's been a hard day. My husbands cried nearly all day and I've just had to try and be strong for him. He's taking it really really hard and it's a killer to watch. I just keep forgetting that he's not round the corner at my mums he's actually just gone. Hopefully time will heal. Thankyou for all your kind words he was the kindest dog I've ever met

I am so sorry. I love greyhounds and lurchers. Very gentle and sweet natured.

unicornsandrainbows98 · 19/10/2019 20:40

@percheron67
That's so very true. They are gentle giants. I used to call bolt the BFG because he wouldn't hurt anyone in the world

Bless. I really feel for you. There is nothing I can do or say to mend you but you will both be in my prayers. I am so glad that he was a much loved person and not some mistreated soul. I now this is not the done thing on Mumsnet but I sendXXX.

Should read know.

Dangerfloof · 19/10/2019 21:03

Bless you sweets, he was lovely.
It sadly happens to all us pet owners one day. And still it's a bad time.
I always think this time I wont cry because I gave them the best life, but I always do.

So sorry op - what a lovely boy he was. And he would have known just how much he was loved.

I really hope no one says 'it's only a dog' either here or in rl. Someone said that to DH after his cat died (she was 21 so a good innings) and DH had to leave before he hit him.

They leave footprints on our hearts.

@percheron67

Ah poor litttle chap - well if they could do nothing for him You did the kindest thing x

unicornsandrainbows98 · 19/10/2019 21:11

@AnneElliott that's such a mean thing to say. Animal lovers really don't understand the pain left behind after a pet sadly leaves us. You see them nearly every day for X amount of years, how could you possibly not grieve for them.
@bengalcat and I know that's a comfort knowing he's not in pain. At the end I did desperately ask the vet is there nothing else we can do? Hoping he would suggest an alternative

I keep reminding myself that choosing to PTS is the last act of love we can give our animals.

MitchellMummy · 21/10/2019 12:20

So very sad for you. Worse I think as it was sudden, although with older dogs each day is a bonus you would often have some warning. Lovely picture, hope you have lots of happy memories. Love to you all. x
