We are just about to get a Labrador puppy and so we are deep in researching all the recommendations. One of my friends had a Lab years ago and always kept him outside overnight in the garden in a specially built totally weatherproof kennel. He was allowed inside during the day, but at night was always put to bed in the garden. Does anyone else do this? What are the benefits? She said during winter he grew a very thick oily coat as a result!! She said when they were out at work and he was home alone they would always leave him in the garden, I guess this was the benefit of being outside to them. Interested in other experiences and views . . . I'm a start as I mean to go on type of parent so taking a similar approach with the pup!

Please don't leave you dog outside overnight or when you are out. Unscrupulous people steal dogs for breeding purposes or as bait dogs to encourage fighting dogs. Please don't.

My dog is outside during the day if it is fine and we are out. He much prefers it. He has a very thick double coat and overheating is much more of a concern than him ever being cold, he used to hang out outside at -45 +wind chill so British weather doesn't bother him. He sleeps in the kitchen. He is very social and happy and exceptionally well trained.

Are you talking about a normal family dog?
I have a friend who has 5 labs who are working gun dogs and they live outside in special kennels. Because they are working dogs. They are not family pets left outside alone. This is not the same thing IMO

Theft. HUGE problem in gundog breeds...keep your dog in and keep it safe.
