What is the most bizzare habit your dog has?

My DDog has the most annoying habit which doesn’t make any sense

I have hard flooring all of my downstairs of my house. He eats Lily’s Kitchen dry food

He will bring Every Single piece of the dry food in his mouth all the way from the kitchen into the lounge, drop it into the long pile rug and then find it and then eat it - or half the time, lose it Angry so if you walk across one half of the rug, it has 20 soggy dog biscuits stuck in it

He does a weird thing where he kind of lifts his back legs in the air and poos against walls, lampposts, etc. so that the doings are stuck to the front of the item in question rather than on the floor. It’s almost quite impressive, it just looks weird if someone spots you picking it up as it looks like you’re smearing dog poo into things. Thanks bud. Grin

incywincydoggy · 20/09/2019 11:08

She has a perfectly good water bowl, but in the evenings if we are watching tv upstairs then she’ll pace in the en-suite until you find something to fill with water and place it in the shower tray for her to drink. The item is currently a plastic wok from a play kitchen!

DimplesToadfoot · 20/09/2019 12:13

I can't have a drink while standing up without Misty running around like mad barking her head off, shes a weird one, makes me laugh though :-)

MsMightyTitanAndHerTroubadours · 20/09/2019 12:20

Our GSDs were dreadful at drinking, the first one made the second one worse, and we had the pair of them drinking and then wandering about the house with the last mouthful

I don't think any of us had dry socks for nine years.

Historydweeb · 20/09/2019 12:26

Mine chatters his teeth when he smells other dogs wee 😂 he looks at me, I ask him if it was nice and he drools and chatters. It's hilarious but I suppose you have to be there. He's a golden retriever if that makes any difference.

confusedandemployed · 20/09/2019 12:30

DDog is 17 and he and his late, lamented sister would both do the same thing (he still does it): when they've had something especially nice for tea, they will wipe their mouths on their dog bed by nuzzling into it furiously, and then wriggle delightedly all over it. Weird beyond.

confusedandemployed · 20/09/2019 12:30

@Historydweeb I have noticed DDdog do this if he smells a female dog's wee who's in heat!

GinLemonade · 20/09/2019 13:59

My dog will also pick his dry food out and take it somewhere else! He will take it from the kitchen onto the front door mat and eat each piece one by one. Funny little thing

missbattenburg · 20/09/2019 14:07

@Historydweeb and @confusedandemployed this is the flehming response in which they wet the scent molecules and transfer them to their vomeronasal organ up through the roof of their mouth. This is a scent organ that we humans have, but don't use. In dogs it is used to 'smell' very small molecules such as pheromones. That's why they are more likely to do so with female wee.

It's the same process as lizards who dart their tongue out use to smell the air.

missbattenburg · 20/09/2019 14:07

flehmen (not felehming)

willywillywillywilly · 20/09/2019 14:18

@Historydweeb my dog chatters his teeth too! It's so funny Grin

willywillywillywilly · 20/09/2019 14:19

Oh @missbattenburg just read your reply! That's interesting thanks

Span1elsRock · 20/09/2019 14:23

Our puppy loves to spread water over the entire kitchen. We all go through pairs of socks like nobodies business............ it's like living in a pond Hmm

The older dog insists on rolling tennis balls under beds and sofas, then lies there staring at them and whimpering. You get the ball out, usually involving moving said sofa or bed, then 30 seconds later it's back under it again and you repeat the process ad infinitum......... some nights when you're tired, it's really not that cute...............

But i luffs them really Grin

littlemeitslyn · 20/09/2019 14:25

🙄

confusedandemployed · 20/09/2019 14:29

@missbattenburg interesting thanks!

shinynewapple · 20/09/2019 21:42

@PookieDo my dog does exactly the same! Used to feed him just wet food but started to give him the breakfast crunch for his morning meal and he keeps bringing the biscuits one by one into the living room.

Flurgle · 20/09/2019 21:59

Steals tea.
If your cuppa is within reach and you leave the room you come back to half a cup and mysterious splashes. But he’s good at not getting caught. Doesn’t like coffee though.

Maxineputyourredshoeson · 20/09/2019 22:07

Our puppy has a couple;

  • when he has his dentastix thing in the morning he won’t eat it until we have done the routine; I have to tell him to get it, he jumps around, I then say mummy get it, more jumping, daddy get it, more jumping, dd1 get it, more jumping, dd2 get it, more jumping, Steve (that’s his name) get it and he eats it.
  • At bedtime he has to have a love with us both, he gets into bed right between us and has a cuddle up until the point DH falls asleep. He then lays at the bottom of the bed between us for 5mins and then on to the floor.
  • When he eats his dinner he always starts with his favourite bit and always picks bits out, carries them across the room and sits down to eat them.
  • He likes to sleep with the tip of his ear in his water bowl.

I’m sure there’s more, he is a funny little boy Grin

Kayjay2018 · 20/09/2019 22:10

Our Doberman has two weird habits: 1. She bites the water when having a drink, she doesn't lap it with her tongue and 2. She has a sucky blanket that she pulls a piece of into the right shape then chews/sucks it to settle herself down in the evening
Our rescue pup will gently lead you buy the finger to wherever he wants you to go (usually the sofa for a cuddles). The best one so far was the other night when he led my teenage son up to bed! He obviously felt it was getting late

Iwantacookie · 20/09/2019 22:28

My dm dog will lie on her back if you tell her to go have a wee

Blutopia · 20/09/2019 22:42

These are all making me feel a little teary because my little old dog is having one of her bad nights where she's distressed and can't settle - I'm trying to soothe her but her whole body is rigid. No idea what's wrong.

Trying to think of her silly habits. She has a greeting routine with DH, when he gets in she barks like a loon and gallops around, finally leaping up onto a bed or sofa and flopping onto her back so he can blow raspberries on her belly. If he misses out any part of this routine, she fusses until he completes it.

She also does the thing with dry food, only this morning I stood on a soggy one in the hallway.

She has a favourite laying spot on the sofa, which is between my legs when I stretch out - she must bring a chew to keep with her whilst laying with me, even though she never actually eats the chew. She has a collection of partially eaten rawhide objects, which she collects - every couple of days I move them all back to her toybox, and each night she systematically brings them all back again and distributes them around my seat.

I love these stories. It's their funny little ways that make us love them so much.

Another one with Maggie: She loves loves loves the Park. To her, there is no better place. Our joke is she takes us to the park rather than the other way round. When we put her lead on to go home, she knows her time is up, and starts all kinds of delaying tactics. Rolling around in the grass is one. Another is suddenly noticing another dog (she adores playing with other dogs) then she will go into playbow pose and refuse to move to the point we end up having to almost drag her to get her to move.
