Do you feed breakfast or go for a walk first?

Hi

My puppy is almost 12 weeks old and will be able to go for walks next week. I am trying to work our what our routine will be in the morning.

I get up at 6.30am and leave the house just before 8.30am. I had thought about taking pup for a walk when I wake up (only a short one while he is young) and then giving him breakfast about 7.15am. That would give him an hour to go to the toilet if he needs to before I leave. I am only gone around 3 hours but he still isn't house trained so I would need to take him out.

Does this sound best or do some people give breakfast first then go for a walk?

Walk first then breakfast Bella poos on her walks so goes roughly ten hours between pees and poos as she doesn't pee or poo in the garden. In the evening she walks and then has dinner as well.

Up and out for a long walk then breakfast. Sometimes long walk ends up in a beach front cafe for breakfast, and on these occasions I carry some dry food and water for Dog. He also gets free sausage in his favourite cafe. He sleeps by my feet then while I eat. Then long slow mooch home.

Our dog is funny. He will only eat his brekkie when we are having ours, so it’s

Out for a quick pee,
Hours walk
Breakfast

He also only likes dh taking him for his morning walk if we’re both home, so it’s a win-win situation for me as I get the lie ins.

Please do not feed your dog before exercising (or immediately after). Although the risk of bloat is higher in deep chested dogs, all are at risk. It is awful. And often fatal.

Before work we run first at 0430, then my dog is fed. At the weekend I often feed first at about 0600 wish if I manage a lie in for that long - often earlier - and then we'll go for a run or a walk a few hours later, so lots of time for the food to be digested; I don't want to risk bloat.

ish....not wish!!

We walk first then eat. She doesn't eat if she hasn't been a walk first

Breakfast at 8, first walk about 8.45. She does fine with this and it works with the school run for us.

Hi keep our puppy is 15 weeks old and we've not yet started walking him in the morning.

His normal routine is up about 7.15, goes straight out and normally needs a wee and poo then.

He plays outside and inside for an hour ish and then has breakfast about 8.15.

He goes for a wee again after that and then is normally ready for a nap!!

We take him out for a walk about 6ish in the evening. Having read this thread I'll be giving him his dinner after his walk and not before. Had never heard of bloating (something else to worry about now!)

We will start walking him in the mornings at some point but I just don't think he needs it yet.

My hell hound is a bit older than yours, he's one year old soon, and I always feed mine his meals after the walk. He's a deep-chested breed so it's always best anyway, but health aside, I find it makes him more focused on walks, keener on training etc. I fed him a few times before walks, and found during it he's very 'meh' to listening/behaving!

Also helps him to relax more on a full belly. Otherwise he'd be on the go 24/7.

We've always free fed our dog, he doesn't have access over night but all the time we are home. If you have a garden then letting them out first, feeding then walk makes more sense to eliminate accidents.
