Dog has (unprovoked) hatred of certain breeds

My one year old whippet has a completely random fear/hatred of pugs and french bull dogs. He loves most dogs and loves to greet them and have a good sniff but when we see aboveboard mentioned breeds, he tried desperately to get off the lead and barks in an aggressive manor which is really unusual for him as he rarely barks normally, let alone in that tone. Anyone experienced a similar situation and how did you resolve it? I hate it when owners think he’s some aggressive monster but it’s genuinely only those two breeds!

Omg OP my mini dachshund hates French bulldogs and pugs too! He barks like mad when he sees one, it's so embarrassing. Very interesting about the theory @Huffthemagicdragon , thank you!

Wtf @MattMagnolia who kicked your dog?! Once ddog was barking at a giant black greyhound, just yapping not attacking or anything, and the owner kicked him Shock. I started yelling 'don't kick my dog!' and then the own pushed me! Some people!!!

My dog (OES) hated Westies. He became uncharacteristically growlly and aggressive when we saw one. He was terrified of huskies for no reason.

He socialised well with very other dog we came across.

We have a 6 year old labrador that very rarely barks. He has been the most placid quiet dog I've ever known since a pup. Door bell/knock, cats in garden, neighbours dogs barking, nothing makes him bark. On the rare occasions he has barked it has been one single bark then he looks confused about where the noise came from 🤣

Until he met this local schnauzer. Everytime he sees it, even from a distance he barks at it until it is out of sight, we cross the road to avoid and he keeps barking at it, the owner must think he is a dangerous out of control dog!. He knows other schnauzers and doesnt have the same reaction. No idea what it is about this dog that sets him off.

My beagle hates next doors JRT - and the feeling is mutual! They would genuinely fight if given the chance - he's fine with other small dogs so no idea what this one did to piss him off 😂

However he loves bigger dogs - his best friend is a sheepdog/Newfoundland cross, for example. And he loves our other neighbours malamute and my SIL's husky. Maybe because they have similar play styles (a bit rough and bitey) whereas the terrier just yaps and snaps!
