Dog suffering from dust mite allergies- any advice?

Our two-year-old Cavalier King Charles suffers from dust mite allergies which cause him to have itchy ears and to lick his feet obsessively. We Hoover/dust/wash bedding as much as we can and have put him on piriton as recommended by the vet but it doesn’t seem to be working. This is a new allergy (developed in the last 6 months).

Does anyone else’s dog suffer from a similar issue and have they been put on any medication that’s helped? Or any natural remedies or anything I can do in the home environment that can help?

Mine went on apoquel, that worked well... the dermatologist reckoned there wasn’t much point in trying to control it environmentally as you just can’t get them all.

We tried everything
She used to have injections of dust mite allergens to induce a resistance.
They were very expensive and didnt work.

Steroids were used for a while and I think they're a contributing factor as to why we are now facing kidney disease ( although she is nearly 16)

What worked eventually is apaquel. It is very good.

We did do quite a lot to control the environment . Wooden floors, washed vet bed very regularly and used a HIK9 bed that helped a lot.

We also did the injections of allergens she did get better as she got older whether due to the things above or not I have no idea.

She was always much worse when we went on holiday and stayed in other houses.

It is also unusual to have just one allergy so might be worth testing a bit more. Ours was also allergic to clover so rich grass areas where best avoided. It is worth changing where you walk and see if things improve. We could be on sand and at the beach quite happily but not walk on lush grassy areas. Fine on the moors as long as the heather was not out for example.

Have you sprayed the house as well. Some of the decent flies house sprays kill dust mites too. Indorex does I believe. Just need to spray house annually and could help

My dog is also allergic to house dust mite amongst other things.
I do all the hoovering, mopping, as many hard surfaces as possible etc.
The only thing that keeps her itching at bay is apoquel, she is a totally different dog on it!

Has anyone's dog suffered with coughing and gagging whilst on Apoquel? I started my dog on it a couple of weeks ago but he started coughing, so I've stopped it for now. The vet says it is not connected.

Doublethesarcasm · 06/09/2019 12:17

@Jennylinda79 never had a problem.

I have remembered there is a slightly more expensive treatment in the form of an injection. Now to try and remember what it's called.

Thank you all. We have some medicated shampoo to start with which seems to be working for now! Fingers crossed
